Please, don't make me NFC's sixth seed

If you're the Detroit Lions, you hope Green Bay doesn't play its starters in the season finale. In fact, you say a prayer the Packers don't.

No Aaron Rodgers would lessen the chances of a Green Bay win, and that's critical to Detroit's playoff future. Even though the Lions are headed to the playoffs, they don't want the sixth seed ... and neither does Atlanta. The reason: You have to go to New Orleans, where the Saints don't lose.

Draw the sixth seed, and say goodnight.

New Orleans doesn't just beat opponents at home; it clobbers them, with Monday's rout of Atlanta the latest example. The Saints are built for the Superdome and excel there, with the Saints four times putting 40 or more points on oppnents and once sticking 62 on Indianapolis.

Atlanta doesn't want to meet them there, and neither do the Lions. So the rush is on for the fifth seed, and Detroit holds it -- pending, of course, the outcome of Sunday's game in Green Bay.

The Falcons' hope is that Rodgers and the Packers' first team not only play but play long enough to win. The Lions' hope is that Rodgers and the first team don't play ... or play so little that the Lions can prevail.

Bottom line: Detroit needs this game. So does Atlanta. Only the Falcons need Green Bay to win.

The fifth seed would play at Dallas or the New York Giants, and tell me where you'd want to play: There or in New Orleans. Uh-huh, so would I. That's why the jockeying for the NFC's fifth seed is one of this weekend's biggest stories.

Dude.....the Saints have won 7 in a row! I'd say they are the NFC's hottest team right now. The Lions have barely righted their ship. They're one and done regardless of who they play but it would be a blast to have the Saints play them. We'll hang another 62 like the kitties are the second coming of the Colts. Haha.

I guess Clay Matthews will have icicles in his locks in January after he "refreshes" himself on the sidelines...lol...I mean really?

Nice article Judge...lol...wasn't this the same sentiment towards Seattle last year for their matchup against the Saints?  This is why we play the games.  Detroit's performance in week 16 looked a lot like the Saint's week 16 performance.  That being said, I don't think any teams are begging and pleading not to get the 6th seed.  Again, nice article Judge, didn't the 6th seed win the Super Bowl last year?

The Lions are the hot team in the NFC. Provided they chill out on the penalties they could get to the SuperBowl. That said, they just wiped out a Chargers team which is in serious mental turmoil, and which is going to go through major changes this offseason. So not much to build on there.

That said the Lions have the best D in the NFC and could handle any other teams in the playoffs, provided they play smart football (i.e. no penalties).   The winner of the NFC Least will be a joke.

Unfortunatley dude, the Packers don't have a running game to fall back onto.  If Rodgers isn't able to throw the ball well, you can forget it.  Let's not mention the porous defense they bring to the table every week, it's a joke.  By the way, it's pretty warm here in Green Bay for late Dec/ early Jan.

It makes no difference who plays who and when.  The Lions will beat the Saints in Round 1 or in the NFC Championship game.  The Lions are on a roll right now, and they plan on staying hot.  The Lions held there own against the Saints in week 13, but penalties killed them.  They will be more disciplined and they will have Suh back for this game.  Drew Brees will have a tee time on Monday, January 9th.  Then the Lions will roll into Lambeau for a 2nd time in 3 weeks and take them out.  I can see Detroit playing New England for the ring.

Dude the average tempeture in Greenbay in January is 15.7, and thats middle of the day. Average lows are around 7.  Then factor in the windchill and HELL YEAH its PackerFootball at its finest.  Youve got to play 200 miles south of here to get averages of 40 degrees in January.

I doubt the Packers play Rogers or any offensive starters this week.  There is no reason too.  Maybe if Detroit was playing to get into the playoffs they might.  But with the #1 seed lock up there is no reason to risk injury to Rogers and Co.  I do hope James Jones gets alot of ball thrown his way because I want to start him this week in fantasy along with Calvin Johnson and A.J. Green or Jones might stay on my bench and start Laurent Robinson if Rome is healthy enough to play.Cool
