There seems to be a lot of waffling on the future of San Diego coach Norv Turner, and, according to a source close to the organization, there's good reason. He believes that Turner and general manager A.J. Smith will be retained.

Of course, that's not set in concrete. Nothing is this time of year. But it's the first tangible sign that both will return next season.

Turner has two years left on his contract at $3 million per, and Smith has three years left at $2 million per season. According to the source, he believes that ownership is reluctant to fire each or both, then have to pay them.

But there's more to it than that. Quarterback Philip Rivers is a big fan of Turner and voiced his support Sunday for his embattled head coach. Team president Dean Spanos is reluctant to fire Turner, too, one reason he wants time to sit on the decision.

The public, of course, has made its displeasure with the Chargers known, but this year's team did not have the playmakers and talent people associate with the club. Injuries depleted the offensive line and wide receivers, tight end Antonio Gates played through a painful foot injury and the defense leaked too often.

Plus, there were too many turnovers, with Rivers committing a career-worst 20 interceptions.

Nevertheless, the Chargers won four of their last five starts to finish in a three-way tie for first in the AFC West -- with the club losing the tiebreaker to Denver. That the team fought down the stretch will count for something, but it's the second time in two seasons the Chargers missed the playoffs.

That will go into Spanos' thinking. But so will a business decision. That's one reason he begged off on making an immediate move, saying he needed a couple of days to think about it.

#$%&!!!  I don't know who's worse; Caldwell or Turner.  They both need to be fired....three months ago.

There is absolutely no excuse for the way either of these teams underperformed this year.

Manning goes down and all of a sudden the Colts defense forgets how to play?   Same thing for the Chargers.  The Bolts defense stinks up the house and the offense can't remember that it's the fourth down?

Fire them both and please, please, please bring some competitiveness back to the league.

It was Rivers and Marty that led the Chargers to 14-2.  Rivers is as good of a QB as there is in the league.  Norv has needed to go for years.  This team became soft on his watch.  The defense went from being hard nosed and feared, to being soft and pushed around.  I blame Norv for the demise of Merriman and Tomlinson.  His pansy philosophies resulted in their injuries.  If Marty were still here, LT would be the NFL's all time leading rusher by now.

There is no excuse for this team not having 2 or 3 superbowls by now..........

THIS IS COMING FROM A SAINTS FAN.

Why is everyone making excuses for Norv and AJ? Two straight seasons without playoffs in the worst division in the NFL is a joke when you are the only team with a franchise QB. Injuries? Poor play by Philip Rivers? How about this, the Patriots just locked up the #1 seed in the AFC with the worst 32nd ranked defense in the NFL! You think Bill Belichick has time for excuses? How about the Steelers, playing with a banged up Ben Rothlisberger all year and still make the playoffs, or better yet how about the Houston Texans who lost their QB somewhere around week 6 and still win their division, see guys its about making adjustments, not excuses.
The fans deserve better! Here we have Dean trying to save a few bucks with a broken system, hes not trying to win obviously!

Spanos musn't be tired of the mediocrity that comes with a Norv Turner coached team.  This team in its current state missed its window of opportunity.  Its time to clean house outside of Rivers and Weddle and start over.

I'm kinda tired of hearing how we should've kept Brees and that we would have been better with him than Rivers. I'm not buying it. Please don't get me wrong, I love Brees but at the time it was the right business decision. Brees wrecked his shoulder and some doctors thought he might never throw again. That said, Brees is a much different QB on grass. He's AWESOME on turf but he does come down to earth when he's on grass. His numbers wouldn't be nearly the same as they are with the Saints. They have better WR's and RB's. I wasn't a huge Rivers fan at first but I certainly am now. He's the only one on our offense who plays with an attitude and with passion EVERY GAME. Norv and AJ need to go but It's not looking like that will for sure happen.

I don’t get it. This team is getting worse each year. The window is closing. Do they want to hit rock bottom before they make a change. This team has gotten progressively worse talent wise in the last 4 years. Smith has not added talent and Norv cannot get to a Super Bowl. What are you waiting for Mr. Spanos?

Tired of hearing excuses! Norv needs to go, this is 2 years in a row for missing playoffs in the worst division in football is a laugh! How about the Patriots? Bill Belichick has the 32nd ranked worst defense in the NFL and still locked up the #1 seed! How bout them apples!

Horrible comment.  Nobody would trade Rivers for Sheli Manning.  If Rivers had the Giants defense, he would have 2 rings.  The giants d won that superbowl, not sheli.  Stupid comment.  Sheli in a chargwers uniform would have been awful.  Rivers all day every day.

Sounds like the movie Major League.  It wouldn't shock me if such a plan to move to LA was hatched.
