Source: Turner, A.J. could return to Bolts

There seems to be a lot of waffling on the future of San Diego coach Norv Turner, and, according to a source close to the organization, there's good reason. He believes that Turner and general manager A.J. Smith will be retained.

Of course, that's not set in concrete. Nothing is this time of year. But it's the first tangible sign that both will return next season.

Turner has two years left on his contract at $3 million per, and Smith has three years left at $2 million per season. According to the source, he believes that ownership is reluctant to fire each or both, then have to pay them.

But there's more to it than that. Quarterback Philip Rivers is a big fan of Turner and voiced his support Sunday for his embattled head coach. Team president Dean Spanos is reluctant to fire Turner, too, one reason he wants time to sit on the decision.

The public, of course, has made its displeasure with the Chargers known, but this year's team did not have the playmakers and talent people associate with the club. Injuries depleted the offensive line and wide receivers, tight end Antonio Gates played through a painful foot injury and the defense leaked too often.

Plus, there were too many turnovers, with Rivers committing a career-worst 20 interceptions.

Nevertheless, the Chargers won four of their last five starts to finish in a three-way tie for first in the AFC West -- with the club losing the tiebreaker to Denver. That the team fought down the stretch will count for something, but it's the second time in two seasons the Chargers missed the playoffs.

That will go into Spanos' thinking. But so will a business decision. That's one reason he begged off on making an immediate move, saying he needed a couple of days to think about it.

Norv needs to go, but slow down on all the AJ talk guys

He brought in gaither this season and Barnes (last year) t via free agency BOTH of whom played amazingly well (Bob Sanders cost us nothing and was a low risk high reward pickup) Spikes hadd 111 tackles which is productive in my book.  AJ drafted Eric Weddle and Rivers (pro bowlers this year) He He also has one of the highest % when it comes to players drafted/players still playing or starting in the league.  Its no coincidence that every year the chargers are labeled as contenders, this team has been built by AJ, his two major mistakes have been letting Sproles go, and Retaining the services of Norv too long!

He also drafted Ryan Mathews who just put up 1,500 all purpose yards this year guys!

If AJ Smith is back, then I am done with the Chargers.  I'm only one fan, but I will be an ex-fan if AJ keeps his job.

Seriously?  How much more evidence do you need that the dyamic duo isn't working?

This is just another reason why they'll be the LA Chargers in a few years.

I feel for you Chargers fans.Dealt with the same thing with the Lions, keeping crappy coaches longer than they should have.I think you have no choice but to deal with it.If you guys boycott them, they'll start looking LA's way with that new stadium.

To all the SD fans wishing for a Turner free team next year.
He had the best season in the recent history of the Redskins and where have they been since then?

Not everything the Chargers failed at this year was Turner.  I think mgmt underestimated how much of a weapon Sproles was and they have yet to replace Tomlinson (meaning a top back they can put on the field and forget about).  No Gates for most of the year hurt.

Anyway if you can get Fischer or Cowher maybe it is a good move but you will pay either of those guys more than Turner and Smith combined.  You need players more than a coach

Wow. As a Chargers fan, I have to hope this is just conjecture. The Chargers have literally gotten worse every year under Norv's tenure. I have said it a million times before, but I will say it again: The numbers speak for themselves. The guy is a lifetime loser as a HC. Period. This is bearing itself out in San Diego as well. Everybody except ownership seems to see it. The fact that they made a poor business decision by resigning him to a 4 year deal should not doom a team and an entire fanbase to suffer through mediocrity for 5 years. That is just bad ownership.

AJ Smith is a mediocre GM, and his "eye for talent" seems to only be accurate once every couple of years in the draft. Who was the last big time productive free agent the Chargers acquired? Give up? I will tell you: Lorenzo Neal in 2003. Since that time, AJ Smith has done the same thing almost yearly: Pick up a big name free agent who is on the market because they are over the hill and their best years are behind them (e.g. Bob Sanders). And for all those who like to praise his draft picks as working out, I say to you simply one thing: Antoine Cason.

If I hear another person kill the Chargers for letting go of Sproles, I might throw up. Those people who lament his departure obviously didn't watch the Chargers play in 2010-2011, where Sproles was a total nonfactor in almost every game. He got franchised in 2010, bumping his salary from $1.1 million to $6.6 million for the year, and basically let him play his way onto the team. Instead, all his stats took a severe drop. See the following:

2009 - 93 receptions for 343 yards receiving and 3 TDs / 45 rushes for 497 tards and 4 TDs rushing
2010 - 50 receptions for 267 yards and no TDs / 59 rushes for 520 yards and 2 TDs rushing

2010 marked a steep decline in numbers that had been going up significantly on a yearly basis from his initial signing in 2005. The Chargers had no reason to think that a RB, in the 6th year of his career, would rebound so dramatically in the next year, especially when they would have had to pay him $14 million over 4 years to be a third down back and share the backfield with both Mathews and Tolbert. Just like Brees, the Chargers made the best decision for them given the information available at the time.

In any case, if Norv and AJ are both back next year, I am going to seriously have to evaluate my status as a season ticket holder. Giving my money to individuals who obviously care more about their bottom line than to the product I am purchasing is not on my "To Do" List.

Couldn't agree with you more man.. I'm from Michigan and a Lions fan and my buddies and I always talk about how good the Chargers could be if they had a different head coach.  The fact that every single year they start out like garbage (in a division with the Chiefs, Broncos and Raiders to boot) and then make a push at the end really goes to show you how bad the coaching is.. A coach in place for as long as Norv should be able to figure that out in time..  The Chargers should have won 1-2 super bowls the last 5-6 years and its a shame because their window is closing.  Hopefully Norv gets the boot...

I read the title of the article and threw up in my mouth a little.  I would honestly look for a new NFL team to follow if the Chargers bring back both Norv and AJ.
