There seems to be a lot of waffling on the future of San Diego coach Norv Turner, and, according to a source close to the organization, there's good reason. He believes that Turner and general manager A.J. Smith will be retained.

Of course, that's not set in concrete. Nothing is this time of year. But it's the first tangible sign that both will return next season.

Turner has two years left on his contract at $3 million per, and Smith has three years left at $2 million per season. According to the source, he believes that ownership is reluctant to fire each or both, then have to pay them.

But there's more to it than that. Quarterback Philip Rivers is a big fan of Turner and voiced his support Sunday for his embattled head coach. Team president Dean Spanos is reluctant to fire Turner, too, one reason he wants time to sit on the decision.

The public, of course, has made its displeasure with the Chargers known, but this year's team did not have the playmakers and talent people associate with the club. Injuries depleted the offensive line and wide receivers, tight end Antonio Gates played through a painful foot injury and the defense leaked too often.

Plus, there were too many turnovers, with Rivers committing a career-worst 20 interceptions.

Nevertheless, the Chargers won four of their last five starts to finish in a three-way tie for first in the AFC West -- with the club losing the tiebreaker to Denver. That the team fought down the stretch will count for something, but it's the second time in two seasons the Chargers missed the playoffs.

That will go into Spanos' thinking. But so will a business decision. That's one reason he begged off on making an immediate move, saying he needed a couple of days to think about it.

I am at the ledge..... Spanos is cheap- that is common knowlege. As a business decision, why would he pay those guys to not work? We Chargers fans must unite in our displeasure. I stopped spending money on any SD related material two years ago. I don't hold season tickets, but would allow them to lapse if I did. It's academic if they move to LA anyway.People, we must withhold our $$$$ from these douche bags!

If the Spanos family does the unthinkable and retains either or both, SD fans should boycott games...and watch them play in empty stadiums...they both had their Chances...regardless of how they ended...fact is we haven't been to the playoffs in 2 years and it's obvious we need mgmnt changes...of course Rivers likes Norv...he allows 20 plus ints...and babies him. Norv has no backbone as far as standing up to his players as a disciplinarian. Maybe fans could start wearing paper bags like the ol saint fans ...

As a Broncos fan, besides us getting a real QB....this is best possible news I could receive.  Please keep Turner as your coach and give us more time to rebuild!  Then it won't matter who you get, we will be ready.  He is a good coordinator, but below average head coach.  The Chargers should have been to the Super Bowl and won it with all of the talent they had in the last few years, but he has held them back...keep up the good work!

Norv has had 5 years...and hasn't gotten it done.  His carrer win percentage as a head coach is 0.484.  This is really what you want for a head coach?  Brainwashed suckers.

Turner is not an awful coach, just a mediocre one.  Average coach makes for an average team.

A.J. Smith is a fairly decent (but not awesome) evaluator of talent.  But the players hate his guts
because he plays lowball with them in salary negotiations every time out.

If I were the Chargers owner, I would:

a)
;  fire Turner

b)
;  keep Smith only if he's willing to have his powers restricted to the scouting and talent

;     evaluation aspect of it.   If he doesn't like those conditions, he's gone as well     &

J Smith should have been fired monday morning. Its not Norv fault and he doesn't make personel decisions. Its AJ Smith and you let Sproles go and you see the season he has had with the saints and he broke a nfl record for all purpose yards and you wonder why the chargers have struglled. They missed sproles big time but AJ Smith have made some horrible choices as a GM and no one wants to come play for the chargers as long as he is in charge and running the show. Give Norv one more year and put a defense together and go out and get a secondary and some LB's! AJ Smith time is up and fire him asap! If you want talented players to come to the chargers get rid of him now!!!!!!!

Wow. Turner should have been gone last year. The Charhers are doomed with him as coach.
