Manningham likely done with Giants; Bucs next?

INDIANAPOLIS -- While New York Giants' general manager Jerry Reese refused to speculate on the future of Super Bowl hero and soon-to-be-free-agent Mario Manningham, sources at this weekend's NFL scouting combine said there is virtually no chance he is back with the Giants.

Instead, they said, Manningham is expected to follow former Giants assistant Mike Sullivan to Tampa Bay. Sullivan, who was the Giants quarterbacks coach, took a job as Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator.

Manningham was the Giants' third leading receiver last season with 39 catches, but he recently told The Vindicator of Youngstown, Ohio, there was a "75 percent chance" he wouldn't return to the Giants and that he "wants the ball more." With Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz each producing over 1,000 yards in receptions last season, that is unlikely to happen in New York.

But there are other reasons Manningham won't be back, sources said. First, they said, he would know Sullivan's offense, so there is no learning curve. Second, people close to Manningham indicate that he wants to go to a warm-weather club, and last time I checked Tampa Bay qualified on that score. Third, sources said the Giants probably wouldn't make him a contract offer, not only because they believe his price may be too high but because they're more interested in a wide receiver who can line up at more than one or two spots at the position, which, they said, Manningham cannot.

Manningham's 38-yard over-the-shoulder catch led the Giants to a come-from-behind victory over New England in Super Bowl XLVI -- a catch reminiscent of David Tyree's spectactular reception in Super Bowl XLII and a catch that, like Manningham, led the Giants to a comeback defeat of the Patriots.

Tyree never caught another pass for New York, and, it appears, Manningham won't, either.

"He won't be back," one source predicted.

Manningham likely done with Giants; Bucs next?

He is not the best or 2nd best receiver on the Giants... he might be the best receiver or second receiver on ANOTHER team, but not the Giants... Im sorry, i love Manningham.. im a Giants fan.. but honestly, he is a third receiver here in NY and he cant expect to get number one or 2 money from Reese and the Giants. So, off he goes... i hope nothing but great things for Mario, god knows i love dhim when he was here.

@ maynard - You are obviously right on with what you say but I have to correct you and I don't know why this is a common mistake but it is. Its 5 years..not 4...5. Why everyone is saying 4 i have no idea. we won in the 2007-2008 season and again in 2011-2012 thats 2 titles in 5 years Giants, Steelers,Saints, Packers and Gmen again. @vut  wow dude..really? Reese has been here for 5 years and we have won 2 Superbowls. When people were ripping him for giving up on boss and steve smith he scoffed and guaranteed a playoff spot. I would say ballard replaced boss pretty well and that cruz guy did ok for himself. After all he only had the greatest single season a NY Giant Receiver has ever had. Reese won't sign fan favorites for more than they are worth because..well..because he has brains and is looking out for the bettement of the NY Giant organization. He does his job unbelievably well. Fan favorites don't win you superbowls. Guys that know football in and out and are always working hard looking for the best new talent...thats what wins you superbowls. There is only so much $ to go around. Every team has a cap and no one can go over it. How you use that $ is much more important than keeping a fan favorite. I will be sad to see Mario go to but its time for ramses or jernigan to step it up. Manninghams $ should go to a position where we have a more pressing need. I am prettyhappy with Nicks, Cruz, Barden, Jernigan going into next season. Love to keep Mario but only for the right $.

If he is unhappy with the number of looks he is getting then I don't see him staying.

Why would the Tampa Bay Bucs want a one dimensional WR? Just because the team has hired a former N.Y. Giants coach and made him the offensive coordinator does not mean that he would make a good addition to the Bucs.

Since this coach came from the Giants he should know the limitations of Manningham and not want him as a member of the Bucs.
I too liked the catch made on the sideline while keeping his feet in bounds. That was a great catch. I happen to think that would be a memorable moment in his life. However, over a life time it does not make him anything other than a  one dimensional player that can only play one position.

So what you're saying is that you know more about Manningham than one of his former coaches? I guess the Bucs should have hired you as their new OC.

So do YOU think that just because a guy is coaching a team that he knows more than the fans ?? If that were always the case, then why are coaches ever fired ??

Sometimes fans do know more about things such as playcalling than coaches do. Not usually,  but it is possible. There are a few average joes out there who will never get a chance to prove it because the supposed intelligence in an NFL front office or college AD's office doesn't believe the guy driving a semi or selling insurance knows anything about the game.

I agree, Ramses Barden or Jernigan can fill the void, hell for every touchdown Super Mario caught, he dropped one just about. The system worked because Eli didnt have a favorite target to pass to so he passed to everyone, so one of them can step right on in there.

@ vut315, yeah this Reese guys doesn't have a clue.  Only 2 rings in 4 years.  You can't pay Manningham what other teams can afford when you already have Nicks and Cruz at WR.
