Vilma comes cheaply

A league source just told me the New York Jets received a fourth-round pick in this year's draft from New Orleans for linebacker Jonathan Vilma. It was his understanding that the two clubs discussed two options, with one a conditional fourth-rounder in the 2009 draft that could move to a third depending on how much Vilma plays. However, the Jets settled for a firm fourth, he said. Vilma was a terrific player with the Jets when he operated in the 4-3 defense but his performance tailed off the past two seasons in the 3-4 and he has a history of injuries. "Is he a risk?" asked one player personnel director. "Absolutely. Especially on turf. But it's not much of a risk when you're talking about a fourth-rounder for first-round talent."

Vilma comes cheaply

A higher draft pick in return for Vilma would have been nice, but people are making it sound like a 3rd-round pick is chump change, which isn't the case. Plus Vilma's coming off an injury, so I'm not sure how much better a pick people are expecting. I hate to see Vilma go but the Jets did what they had to do.  As for the other moves, if Jenkins can stay in shape that's a good trade and if/when Faneca comes on board the Jets will have gone a long way to shoring up the offensive and defensive lines.

Actually, it's a 4th rounder for this '08 draft and a conditional 2nd or 3rd rounder next year based on how often Vilma plays. If the Jets do end up getting a 2nd or 3rd rounder in 09 then they would give back their 4th round pick in 09, so essentially the 4th rounders would cancel each other out, leaving them with a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Talk about convoluted, but in the end I'll take it.

the deal is for a 2008 4th rounder and a second or third in 2009 depending on his performance. if he does make the pro bowl, we get an extra second rounder and i believe we already have a an extra 4th rounder. thats a shitload of draft picks so were in good position for next years offseason anyway. i personally think vilma will have a great year, but he wasnt fitting in the system and we werent gona get much more then a 2nd and 4th rounder for a player coming off his type of injury.

and these "only 3rd rounders" have brought some of the talent we are basing our team around... leon, cotchery, maybe even rhodes all came after the 3rd round.

Vilma comes cheaply

As a Jet fan at first I felt the same way. But who would give more than that for a guy just coming off of surgery? PLUS, they needed some space to make the great moves they are currently making in Jenkins/Faneca.

More is to come. D-Rob is trade bait.

Vilma comes cheaply

I couldn't agree more. Vilma was a 1st rounder & defensive rookie of the year, who was let go for next to nothing. If he was in the league for 10+ years it might make sense, but he is just getting into his prime.

Vilma comes cheaply

As a die hard Jet fan I ask this to management.....Do you ever want to win??  This trade makes no sense to me at all.  The guy was great for us and they just gave him away.  Looks like we'll be stuck in the Giants shadow yet again.

Aren't all games played on turf?

I mean c'mon... Isn't everyone a risk in the league?
