Strong move by Eagles to land Samuel

Wow. The Philadelphia Eagles just landed cornerback Asante Samuel, the top player in this year's free-agent market, in a move that is reminiscent of off-the-field maneuvers in 2004. That was when the Eagles decided they needed to move on impact players to put them over the top, acquiring Jevon Kearse in free agency and Terrell Owens in a trade. They wound up in the Super Bowl. They were determined to take a leap at cornerback this season, either through the improvement of Lito Sheppard or the acquisition of someone like Samuel. Sheppard was a disaster last season, and the Eagles need help at the position. They could use help at safety, too, where Brian Dawkins is in the twilight of his career. Anyway, this is a strong move by Philadelphia to return to the top, and it addresses an immediate need. I still want to know what Sheppard makes of this move and what the Eagles' next move with him is.

Strong move by Eagles to land Samuel

Sheppard has missed 14 games in the past 3 seasons. That's almost an entire season out of three, and was hurt for many of the games he did play in. This signing is good for a number of reasons:

1. Samuel can play in the blitz happy zone style d that Jim Johnson dials in.

2. Sheppard, who is also unhappy with his contract, can be moved out of town. I would love to see Larry Fitz here, but I think that is not possible...but I am sure the Lions may have interest in Lito...can we do something with that and some picks for Roy Williams? Maybe......

3. Charlie Clemons is going to sign today too, so stop the Jared Allen stuff (headcase).

All in all, good start for the Birds....still need a FB (tapeh signed with Vikings), and at least a burner WR (Stallworth??).

I agree Philly Jim; Fitzgerald's price tag will be Lito and a 2nd round pick at most.  Whoever said a 1st and a 3rd is out of their mind.  Shaun Rogers, a pro-bowler fetched a 3rd and 5th; Vilma a pro-bowler fetched a 4th round pick.  You need to have a perfect situation to get a 1st round pick for a player.  Fitgerald's contract is a train wreck which makes him hard to move.  After the Asante signing and Kearse cutting; the Eagles are stil $20M under the cap and can absorb the deal.  I think if the Eagles sign Clemons today; you add depth to the D-Line.  Trade Lito and a 2nd to get Fitzgerald.  At which point, you are good at DE, WR, and CB; or the three top positions that needed to be addressed.  You still have a 1st, 3rd, 4th, 2 5ths, 2 6ths, and a 7th round pick plus compensatory selections to work with.  The draft is really deep at OT and with both Runyan and Thomas looking to retire after their contracts expire this year; OT is a priority.  Use the lower round picks to build depth in the secondary and it would be a perfect off-season.

Strong move by Eagles to land Samuel

As a rabid Eagles fan I'm extremely excited about this move. Clearly our Superbowl year is behind us and we need to start trying to improve our team as our Pro-bowlers are getting older and less able. At first I was worried about where Lito Sheppard is going to go, but, the reminder of his horrible year this past season changes my mind. Hopefully Asante can bring some gas to get these Eagles going again.

Yeah, I'm not sure the Cards can afford to keep him and Boldin both at this point. Dealing him away for defensive help and a high pick would be a sound decision on the Cards part.

Alos, S. Brown is not a Safety. He's already made the statement that he can't play safety, so let's put an end to that theory.

I think the Eagles will have Asante Samuels start and Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard split time 60% to 40%.

With Fitzgerald's huge contract, I think the Cardinals will not be asking for as much as you think.  I think giving up Lito, a 2nd and 3rd round pick would do the trick.  Then the Birds can draft a DE in the 1st round (#19) then go for some back up O-Line pick.  I would just love to see the team stay healthy for a whole season......"Philly" Jim

No, I did not hear it from you first.  I heard it on The Fan Sports Radio 66 at like 1pm yesterday.  Quit trying to take credit!

I can't see Philly trading Lito Sheppard anytime soon. Even if they were they wouldn't get Larry Fitzgerald because he's to valuable a player to the Cards and far too good for them to give him up. Whoever said that they would trade Lito and draft picks for Jared Allen really needs to re-think what they said. Allen is the best D player KC have had for a while and have tagged him, there is no way they are going to give him up for that. You would have to offer them something huge for them to trade him.

In my personal opinion I think that Lito is a pretty good DB. He had a bad season this year which was plagued by a knee injury but he is a steady option at corner. With Samuel now in Philly taking his starting spot, I really think that Sheppard will be playing with something to prove, Philly will have one tough secondary next year. What I would do is play Samuel and Sheppard as my starting CBs and move Sheldon Brown to Safety replacing Considine. I noticed that Brown plays like a Safety and I think he will play well there next to B Dawk.

The other areas the Eagles need to bolster is the receiving corps and they need a pass rusher to play on the left side and help out Trent Cole. Now trades have been mentioned but they are unrealistic ones. Chris Clemons will be a good signing for the Birds as he is a decent pass rusher, although playing most of his time in Oakland as a backup still put up solid stats, and will provide that extra pass rusher which they need. Now the receiving is an area of concern for Philly, there are options in the draft and in FA. Randy Moss is a reach and to be honest I can't see him with the Eagles, not just because of money but he wants to win and stay with the Pats. I can see Donte Stallworth taking his old #18 back and providing a solid option opposite Kevin Curtis. They could also use the 19th pick of the draft to take a receiver. There will be solid #2 receivers at this point due to quite a talented class but not good enough to break the top 10. A good player to take will be Texas receiver Limas Sweed, a big physical receiver that will allow Curtis to go deep. Mario Manningham or Early Doucet will also be great options if they fall that far.

Now matter what the Eagles end up doing they need to work on those two areas, whether it's through Free Agency or the Draft.

Strong move by Eagles to land Samuel

The word in Philly is that Sheppard was unhappy with his contract and couldn't stay healthy enough to stay on the field. They almost have to trade him now that they've given Samuel the big$ contract or they'll have a huge off-field disruption from Sheppard next season.

I'd love to see them go out and get Fitz. He's 25 and even more importantly is a good person. I believe he's worthy of contract as a top WR talent. The local rumor has the Eagles shopping Sheppard and their #2 pick for him, but the Cards are insisting on it being a #1. J.Walker's knee is a mess and everyone knows it, including the Eagles. He's not a viable option for a team who knows the McNabb window is closing and needs to get a playmaker at WR now if they have any hopes of taking a shot at another ring. The only realistic option at this point seems to be Stallworth coming in as a FA.

They have C. Clemons coming in today and they are expected to sign him which would end the J.Allen trade rumors. Sheppard will be moved, but I have no idea where to or what for at this point.
