In the worst kept secret this offseason the 49ers add Justin Smith, a move that was expected for weeks. Smith is productive, and he is durable. So signing him is a smart move, right? Not so fast. The 49ers play a 3-4 defense; Smith is a 4-3 defensive end who doesn't translate all that well to the 3-4. He said he can play outside linebacker in the Niners' defense, but, really, do you buy Justin Smith to play him out of position? This is another one I don't get by San Francisco. It's not that I don't  like Smith; it's that I don't like him in a defense other than the 4-3. He's a defensive end, not a linebacker.

Hey BoLTZ,

Still bitter from SB 29 I see.  If Justin Smith is a little small maybe he can call up Shawn Merriman and he can hook him up with some of his private stash and he can bulk to 300 in a few weeks.  I don't dislike the Chargers at all, I am SDSU alumni, but ignorant fans irritate me.  I guess there are things in football that must be a constant, right?   When SD actually does something then you can run your mouth.  Smith is a pass rusher but also quite a run stopper.  NFL defenses are starting to get quicker and more athletic to keep up with the ever-changing rules being put into effect to boost offensive production.  As a Niner fan, I wanted Briggs to play next to Willis, but I am ok with Smith taking BY's old spot.

dude mike martz is your OC. He has the biggest play book in the league. Saunders has a some what complex offense, but it is different then martz. Look at Kansas City. We will probably run more like that did when vermail was their and saunders was OC. Good luck with Martz, he is a genius, but he gets the QB killed. your O-line better be the best in the NFL

Since SF didn't get Briggs as we know now that he signed a long-term deal with the Bears, I'm guessing that will deflate a few who have responded here.

Suffering as a Lions fan with Matt Millen at the helm, I''m painfully aware of what bad management decisions look like.  You can only mask having a crappy QB for so long and SF has some serious issues there.  Last year was just painful to watch.  Justin Smith's numbers don't lie... he's not a player you open the bank vault for and yet, that's exactly what SF did.  No matter what defensive formation you play, this guy hasn't proven he's worth that kind of money.

Bruce is older, more injury prone but will provide some decent production IF someone can actually get him the ball.  Nice move getting Martz to work with the quarterbacks.  He should improve them greatly.  I'm sure Carolina fans are breathing a collective sigh of relief right now losing their oft-injured, sometimes-played running back too.  Seems like SF paid a lot of money for guys no one was fighting over.

I would swear Dan Snyder was calling the shots in SF. Good luck and in the meantime, I'll continue to suffer with Millen's decisions.

;      I'm not trying to talk bad about the Niners (i have much respect for them), but Gldendog your are 100% right on:

The problem isnt what position Justin Smith will play.  The problem is that Justin Smith just isn't very good.  That is way too much money for an end with TWO sacks last yr.  TWO!

The Eagles signed Raiders DE Chris Clemons for a 1/4 of that $ and he had 4x more sacks than Smith last yr (8) despite playing 200 less snaps.

i love watching how niners fans have bought into the system of overpaying every single free agent that hits the market...   if the niners did get briggs it still wouldn't matter because he comes from the cover 2 system and he would feel uncomformatable being expected to blitz way more than he does now...

firedawg,

Obviously you've forgotten that we still have Brandon Moore, who led the team in tackles in 2006, and Jeff Ulbrich still here on the inside.

All we need now is a decent O-Line, some good QB play and a pass rush and we're a good team. We could do with letting Tarell Brown start this year as well.

Plus I think that you Rams, despite all your talent on Offence, may struggle on Offence, and it's not just because of the talent and all that, it's because of the co-ordinator, Al Saunders, and that ULTRA-THICK playbook. Damn that thing is almost as big as Shaq.

Martz is the OC not the QB coach and we do need to upgrade in a few areas we need 2 WR's, a DE or DT, 2 LBs ( one starter one backup), A good SS to compete with Chavous, LG, 2 Back up Qb's, Back up Tackle........... Everything else you said I agree with and with our draft pick selection spot, Al Saunders and a few free agents we could be good this year. Peace out Ramfan

The sad part here is, the 49ers truly haven't gained anything, living in cincinnati, watching Smith play... he's nothing more than your average NFL player. He plays 16 games and is nothing more than just a body... he's nothing impressive. You overpaid for Smith. You said, and I quote "they signed Smith to put pressure on the quarterback and stop the run"; The Bengals, yes, those Bengals, from Cincinnati, with that great run stopping D...  let him go, because he doesn't stop the run, or put pressure on the QB.

Maybe you'll get more out of him than the Bengals did, but I'd say with that contract, he won't be trying any harder...

I wont lie to you i don't know that much about the 49ers, but being a Bengals fan I know you guys signed a good pass rusher and I truely hope you get what you wanted for that type of money they payed good luck next year.
