In the worst kept secret this offseason the 49ers add Justin Smith, a move that was expected for weeks. Smith is productive, and he is durable. So signing him is a smart move, right? Not so fast. The 49ers play a 3-4 defense; Smith is a 4-3 defensive end who doesn't translate all that well to the 3-4. He said he can play outside linebacker in the Niners' defense, but, really, do you buy Justin Smith to play him out of position? This is another one I don't get by San Francisco. It's not that I don't  like Smith; it's that I don't like him in a defense other than the 4-3. He's a defensive end, not a linebacker.

Ducku1977,

I'm not too sure how familiar you are with D-Foster, but calling that a huge signing may be overstating it.

He has been our featured back for 2 years now, and hasn't shown the ability to hold onto the ball (a problem that already exists in SF), stay on the field, or be that big difference maker. I mean, why would the Panthers release him if he were such a difference maker. Maybe he'll do better in SF, but thank GOD we Panther fans won't have to suffer through his tapdance routine he does in the backfield before hitting his holes. He may do ok in a mapped out offense in which he needs not to make any decisions, but as a Panthers fan, I say farewell, and good luck with him to the 49ers.

first of all your dogers suck they havnt dont crap since 88
and i hate the giants they suck too,
now you call the rams the lambs your just one of those idoits that jump on any band wagon
its like you coming out the closet when there winning,u must have jersey for every nfl team out there
i been die hard ram fan since the fearsome forsome & dickerson days ,  hell even thru the bad 80s, but they would still beat the 49ers
at least once yr in candlestick
you guys sign martz to be the qb coach not the oc coach
u sign a great wr in bruce but never sign rice ? one aged wide out
isnt going to make you that much better
if martz is calling the shots see frank gore use less
in the offense so y would u sign another rb foster? u should b signing wr
hell i like my teams chances we got the 2nd pick and we just sign josh brown
we got enough money to sign 2 key player on offense
we dont need to really up grade that much
we just need to b injury free

so did he miss the 49ers letting derek smith go?  they might not being saying it but they are transitioning to a 4-3. they're just not dumb enough to go out and directly state it so every team can prep for it.  the niners already have two good outside linebacker they dropped to one good inside linebacker, hmm i can't guess what they're doing?

Amen Joey, someone who actually knows a bit about the '9ers and what's really going on.  If Clark would have seen even one of our games last year he would see that we used a 3-4 4-3 hybrid defense all year. This of course was the first question asked Nolan after the signing and he stated that we've been using the hybrid defense, and will continue to use it with Justin.

The other problem I have with these articles (there's an identical article by Don Banks on SI.com) is that it makes us look like we're carelessly throwing our money around which is just not the case.  We are well under the cap right now and these big money deals are all front loaded so we will be fine down the road with these signings.

And lastly, yes we do have to throw big money at players to get them over to the bay but from the get go Nolan and Mcloughlin have stated that they want football players, not flashy stars.  Nate Clements and Justin Smith equal hard nose, unbreakable, great locker room guys and not to mention they are near the top of the game at their respective positions.

Clark if you've ever seen a 49ers games over the past 3 years you would know that they play a MIX of 4-3 and 3-4, pretty much 50-50 as well. Heck we had the likes of Bryant Young at DE, even though BY was a DT. This guy is here to replace either Marques Douglas or Bryant Young, as both have left. He may play some in the 3-4, but if he does it'll be at OLB, which I don't see happening too often. He'll be in there on pretty much all 4-3 plays though.

Same for us Dodgers LA-TBD (ex Rams fans).  LA vs. SF is magicall.

I'm still a Rams fan until we get a new team and I call them the Lambs.

I remember the Knox years and most Rams teams, since then, have been lambs.

See that's what I mean.  We didn't represent, we won the DAMN THING. You sound like Chief fans, just getting there (playoffs in KC's account) is not  winning it all. Unless you open the record book and see World Champs it means nothing.  You remember that "Oh how many decades ago.  Hey don't get me wrong Justin is from these parts, and I hope the best for him when he isn't playing us.  But trust with that guy you hate being your OC, expect alot of St. Louis retreads.  Sort of like when Montana told Bono the Chiefs will give mad money if you even wore a SF practice jersey. ( Bono spread the love to Grbac, who bought Popson with him)

Look, if you're signing Justin Smith to get to the QB then this is the worst $45 million signing in history. He's never had a double-digit sack season and had just two sacks last year. He's a good locker room guy who doesn't get hurt and plays hard on every down. But he's a complimentary player not a star. So I'd back off Clark on this one.

The 49ers are not sold on sticking with the 3-4 they have been kicking around the idea of going back to the 4-3 or a hybrid of both.  This just solidifies a defense that was good last year and will only be better.  the stats may not show it only because we led the league in offensive 3 and outs.  the thing that he spewed about was that he hasn't paid any attention to what the 49ers intentions this year are.
