In the worst kept secret this offseason the 49ers add Justin Smith, a move that was expected for weeks. Smith is productive, and he is durable. So signing him is a smart move, right? Not so fast. The 49ers play a 3-4 defense; Smith is a 4-3 defensive end who doesn't translate all that well to the 3-4. He said he can play outside linebacker in the Niners' defense, but, really, do you buy Justin Smith to play him out of position? This is another one I don't get by San Francisco. It's not that I don't  like Smith; it's that I don't like him in a defense other than the 4-3. He's a defensive end, not a linebacker.

Living in the Cincinati area, I can tell you that there is no great gain to signing Justin Smith.  He takes too many plays off, or else is just accustomed to getting pushed around.

I don't know why you 49er fans are crying over this article it ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE. Justin Smith is a 4-3 end not a 3-4 end? Obviously you guys do not know the difference. A 4-3 end is more of a pass rusher, smaller and faster. A 3-4 end is like a smaller DT, he is a run stopper who doesn't get very many sacks. Justin Smith is not a run stopper, he is a pass rusher. Look at the SUCCESSFUL 3-4 teams and see who they have as there ends.

Chargers: Igor Olshansky (6-6 309), Luis Castillo (6-3 290)
Patriots: Ty Warren (6-5 300), Richard Seymour (6-6 310)
Dallas: Chris Canty (6-5 299), Marcus Spears (6-4 305)
Pittsburgh: Travis Kirschke (6-3 298), Brett Keisel (6-5 295)
Justin Smith 6-4 275

None of these DE's have more than 4 sacks, but they are all run stoppers. Look at the size they have, and none of them are speed players. A 3-4 defense is pretty much a huge run stopper, and two smaller DT's playing end. The pass rush comes from the outside linebackers, and from blitz schemes that confuse the O-line. Maybe you 49er fans are upset that you have only two decent players on your whole team (Frank Gore, and Patrick Willis the rest of the team is complete trash), and you throw money at players who are overrated. Well be happy because the team from Cali down south will be in the playoffs for the next decade while you guys will be drafting in the top ten for the next decade. It will be a battle between the Raiders and 49ers for worst team in Cali for a long time to come.

Go BoLTZ!!!

Bruce was huge Signing inyour eyes? you need to get those checked dude. I love Bruce, but for what he did, not what he can do now. That dude is old and if he gets hit he will be injured. Think about when you guys lost Jerry Rice to the Raiders..........It will be like that. Good job on foster, but whats wrong with Gore

Who's hating on the Rams? Upset because I called your team the Lambs? Sorry, it's a habit. Who's so MUCH MUTHA? Oh, is he the guy who was partially responsible for "the greatest show on turf" and your only Super Bowl. That guy stinks, but only if he's your head coach.

Reagan Era? 49ers 94 Rams 99

Next to Giants -Dodgers , nothing beats Rams - 49ers rivalry. That is for us San Fran fans.

when is the last time they won the superbowl again? If I remember right the SeaHawks are the reigning NFC West champs and the last of the crew to have a SB appereance. Don't sound like a arrogant Yankee fan by saying you have a SB that was won yrs back.
The Rams got talent and I have them taking over the division this yr (like I did last yr and look where that got me) but call it what it is they haven't done nothing since Martz left.

Lance Briggs IS an impact guy.  They should've thrown whatever they had to at him to land him.  If they do land him then it's a good offseason.  If they dont get Briggs because they had to overpay for Smith, then shame on them.

The problem isnt what position Justin Smith will play.  The problem is that Justin Smith just isn't very good.  That is way too much money for an end with TWO sacks last yr.  TWO!

The Eagles signed Raiders DE Chris Clemons for a 1/4 of that $ and he had 4x more sacks than Smith last yr (8) despite playing 200 less snaps.

The Niners like giving ridiculous $ to players who are not worth ridiculous $.  Nate Clements should not be making Asante Samuel-money.  You overpay for playmakers, not for average players.  I understand you have to overpay when rebuilding but SF hasnt learned to wait and save it's money for the impact players - then jump on those.

Hey Dude, slow your roll.  Don't hate the Rams because we have the last ring to come out the NFC West.  If the Lambs are so freakin bad, how foolish do you sound with SO MUCH MUTHA..... St.L  planning your game  for next year fool.  Be mad at Clark, but leave the last NFC WEST Super Bowl Champs out of your mouth. And be quiet about way back in the Reagan Era before you get started

I honestly think it's a good move because if they stay in the 3-4 then he could play linebacker and i know your getting mad at me saying that but think about he could be the big run stuffing outside linebacker on first and second down and then on third have him put his hand in the dirt and be the pass rushing force and even on first and second he could blitz and they would have a fierce pass rush.

clark you're a moron. With Willis and Lawson at LB and with the current depth at LB (imagine if we sign Briggs!!!!) why would we sign Smith to play linebacker?  please tell me you aren't employed in the sports writing business when you clearly know nothing about what you write.  Next you are going to say why did SF sign Issac Bruce? He's another #2 receiver at best.  Do you know who are OC is now? Mike Martz and who to better help implement the new offense then Bruce?

Bruce and Foster were huge signings in my eyes.  The biggest reason for the 49ers 5-11 record is the offense was off the field in 3 plays most of the season. (No wonder our punter went to the Pro Bowl) If they can manage some time on the field and give the defense a breather, this is not only a playoff contender, but an NFC west contender.  You will see what this defense does with the addition of Smith, the maturing of Willis, Clements getting comfortable in a new defense, and my personal favorite...Manny Lawson coming back from injury to smash QB's.

Getting very excited about the upcoming FA signings and Draft. Faneca may be out of our reach but if somehow we can resign Larry Allen and it being Staley's 2nd season, I see Smith/Hill having time in the pocket.
