How do you eat an elephant?

Indiana fans have been spoiled over the past 70 years with all those NCAA titles and Big Ten championships.  Now we are rebuilding with a new coach Tom Crean.  In his second season I am amazed to see fans posting that maybe he is not the answer.  Lets get some perspective.  Last year we won, with hard-working scrubs, just 6 games. We won only on in conference play. Here we are with about 12 games left and we have already won 9 games.  As I look over our schedule, I would say we could win 4 of the games left.  If we win 13 games this year, that would be a 217% improvement year over year.  Also, consider that 4 losses this year were very winable.  Young players grow rapidly, especially ones with excellent talent.  Coach Crean is doing alot of things right. He honors the proud tradition of the Hoosiers.  He recruits well.  He inspires players.  I hope he is patient.  Remember how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time.  I'm believing great things in the future for our young team and its energetic coach.  Lets see what he does the rest of the year...and have another bite of elephant.

How do you eat an elephant?

This is a long time of year when IU in not in the NCAAB hunt.  March seems sadly dull again. I currently live in SW Ohio; way too much UK hype down here for someone who grew up in Ft. Wayne. My kids made my Christmas & got me the Blu-ray of "Hoosiers." Stunning! Timeless!

I can put up with this until next year, especially with notable improvement this year. The Iowa loss was especially disappointing at home and after good wins again MN and @ PSU. Agree with Dissident on their inability to hold a lead as a coaching issue. Bobby knew when to call a timeout and get people's attention when things started to erode. But this is largely a young team still learning the game at this level of competition. They will not wow people with their talent alone in NCAA. Must take care of the ball. Must hit free throws. Must rebound better.

I'm holding on to hope for next season, more maturity, and another good recruiting class. A surprise or two yet this season would do them a world of good, too.

How do you eat an elephant?

Diddident...I respect your observation. Hope it is not in the cards for IU.  Past experience is a leading indicator for the future. But I think that as the Indiana coach his team is too underdeveloped to really judge his performance at IU. Next year will be an important year.  They often say a coach in college needs four years to get his team and have them fully functioning. We've seen a year and a half.  If we keep seeing forward progress, Crean will keep his job.  I would guess after four years, Crean will have no excuses.  As a fan and as a realist, I see promise.  And I have hope. (can you tell I am a Cubs fan too?).  Keeping hope alive. Otherwise winters in northern Indiana get pretty long!  Go Hoosiers.
