Voting to determine the field has started here! Make sure to keep sending in suggestions. (Latest CBS Blog Entry with more Details! )

This decade is quickly coming to a close. Since 2000 there have been some great teams and some great individual players. Over the next few weeks I will lead the way as we decide who the most impressive player of the last decade has been.

Below I've listed some suggestions to be among the 32 player field for the last decade. I want you guys to help out by suggesting other players and tell me if you disagree with any of the players I've listed below.

How this all works:
I want to identify the top individual player of the last decade. Everyone has a different criteria for defining who that player is. Some individuals are not considered athletes by others while to other people they are. The key here is to somehow find the middle ground between the two. When it's all said and done we will have a winner that everyone here can be proud of.

How to Pick the Best:
That's entirely up to you. I think athletes that win championships, especially multiple championships, deserve more credit than those who don't. You may have a different criteria than I do and that's completely fine.

How the Process Will Continue from Here:
I will list all the players in the competition and put them in a poll later tonight/tomorrow and let everyone vote on all 32 spots. Those 32 players will then be moved into the bracket based on my seeding.

It has to be one of these four:
Federer: Greatest tennis player of all time arguably. (Sorenstam would be second-best golfer)
Woods: Greatest golfer of all time (if he keeps going), but second best at this point of all time. (There is no second place in the 00's)
Phelps: Greatest Olympic achievement of all time. (You have to go back to the 70's -90's for anything close in the Olympics).
Armstrong: Greatest American cyclist of all time. (six straight Tours! come on...)

My vote would have to go to Federer...somehow it has to come down to numbers. And I would count Tennis as "athletic."

Golf is barely athletic, as is baseball.  Anything you can be completely out of cardiovascular shape and still be a professional is not athletic!

Lance Armstrong. He has won the equivalent of 7 Super Bowls by himself. I don't think any single athlete compares with Lance in the past 10 years.

Admitting ignorance is not something people normally like to do, but in this case I can honestly say that before reading your post I had no idea who Normann Stadler was but I am instantly a fan when I hear of the amazing accomplishment of winning 2 ironman triathlon's. Thanks for writing good knowledgable posts as opposed to some of the other garbage I usually read here. Actually your entire second paragraph with the exception of the first sentence is complete news to me and I bet about 90% of the rest of the people on this site. Good job! I will look to read more post by you!

Lance Armstrong hands down! We will never see anyone dominate any event as physically demanding as the tour de france like he did. Tiger Woods. Federer, Serena Williams and Phelps in that order. Notice how all of these guys are involved in idividual sports. I think that deserves more credit than those involved in team sports, because these guys only have themselves to rely on to win. Though the accomplishments of Brady, O'Neal, Bryant and Peyton Manning are great achievments, but they all had a supporting cast to help them win.

Greatest Sportsperson of the Last Decade? Vote

I am in the camp that a NASCAR Driver and golfer don't belong in comparisons with the Lance Armstrongs and Usain Bolts of the world.  Additionally I think it is all too common to focus on the big three (four or five - soccer or hockey) and overlook track and field, bicycling, high altitude mountain climbing, swimming, etc.  I was glad to see that Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps and Lance Armstrong were all included.

The field needs to be expanded to include Asafa Powell, Justin Gatlin and Maurice Green to round out the four fastest people in the world.  Kerron Stewart the Jamaican female sprinter, Svetlana Masterkova who owns the women's world record in the 1000 meter and one mile, Haile Gebrselassie of Ethopia who is the men's world record holder for the Marathon should also be included.  Or how about Normann Stadler.  He was a 2 time winner of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii.  Valery Babanov is a high altitude Russian climber who has won the Piolet d'Or twice.

I cannot definitively say who is the best "athlete" of the last decade.  All I am confident of is that the person did not play professional baseball, football, basketball, soccer or hockey.  The person definitely didn't "drive fast and turn left" or walk 18 holes.  So the list can lose Terrel Owens, Randy Moss, reggie Bush, Junior, A Rod, and the others.  To me an athlete is someone who can push the limits of human physiology and do things that others can only stare in awe at.  For every football, baseball, basketball, hockey or soccer player, you can find another twenty who has done comparable feats.  Based upon this criteria, I would give it to Lance Armstrong but then I think about the support of his teammates on US Postal or Discovery.  That brings me back to Normann Stadler - unsupported and pushed to the brink of endurance.  Normann Stadler is, in my estimation, the greatest athlete of the last decade.
