NBA MVP: Chris Paul or Kobe Bryant?

DON"T FORGET THE BCS CHAMPION PLAYOFF STILL GOING ON!

Chris Paul or Kobe Bryant? That’s a question I get asked a lot as a sports writer, so who really should be the NBA MVP? I will give you three reasons for each player and then give you my winner.

First in favor of Chris Paul.

1. He’s revived the city of New Orleans. He has been fantastic and he has led a franchise that seemingly had nothing back to the top tier of teams in the Western Conference. The Hornets have been one of the best teams in the NBA all season and he should receive most of the credit for that, giving these fans something to cheer for outside of Saints football.

2. Without him New Orleans would be nowhere. There’s no doubt about this one. Yes the Hornets have other talent on their roster but no one can match up with Paul. He can make plays that make his teammates look better. He can shoot, he can pass, and he just does whatever it takes to win. Without Paul I’m not sure the Hornets would even make the NBA playoffs as tough as the Western Conference is this season.

3. Paul does it all, but all that matters is winning. Chris Paul does anything and everything he can to help New Orleans win basketball games. This limits his shot attempts in a lot of games while he distributes the ball to teammates but he could care less. It’s all about winning ballgames.

Now Kobe.

1. He’s played without Bynum and Gasol a lot of the year. At the beginning of the year the loss of Bynum would’ve meant nothing to the Lakers because he had not become a dominant player yet. Gasol wasn’t even on L. A.’s roster. Both became major players for the Lakers but Bryant was the constant force behind the Lakers victories when he played with these two and when he was forced to play without them.

2. He’s been the best player in the NBA the last decade but hasn’t won a NBA MVP award. This is absolutely amazing isn’t it? Bryant has been the best player in the NBA for the last decade and has not won the award yet. Doesn’t he deserve to win at least one?

3. Without him the Lakers would not be a title contender. The Lakers would be nowhere without Bryant and they know it. The NBA would be nowhere without Bryant and they know it to. He asked to be traded during the summer but wasn’t and since then he has earned the respect of him teammates back. Without him Los Angeles probably never would’ve traded for Pau Gasol and would likely be fighting for a playoff spot with just Bynum.

Winner? Bryant. Kobe also does whatever he needs to win ballgames and it’s about time the NBA actually gave the award to their league’s best player.

NBA MVP: Chris Paul or Kobe Bryant?

i'm not joining either bandwagon: the mvp in my book's lebron. the fact that kobe shouldve gotten it the past two years means nothing to me. [between cp3 and kobe, i'm leaning cp3 though..]

sweet site, dan. school's kicking my ass at the moment [hence the lack of support in the above paragraph] but if you've got any holes in coverage definitely don't hesitate to holler at me. you've seen me comment before, your call whether i'd be of assistance or not. just not nascar or golf...i know next to nothing about those and i'm perfectly fine with that

i do follow college lacrosse religiously for what it's worth. though thats probably about ten or fifteen years down the line from being a big deal.

I'm going to give this one to Kobe... but I do it with caution.

Kobe is great, and without him they wouldn't be where they are...  But if not for the acquirement of Gasol, the Lakers wouldn't be getting half the attention they are.

By the way, another high school student here, it would really be something if we could get this thing off the ground. I'm not partial to sports, although NCAAB, NFL, and tennis are probably my "specialties".

Dan,

I'd love to write for your site. I'm really into sports, and thinking that I want to be a sports writer. Get back to me on this, if you want  to see anything I've written I'll send you something.

NBA MVP: Chris Paul or Kobe Bryant?

Anyone know anybody that would enjoy writing for fun, maybe a few articles a week for an upcoming site (hopefully)?
Hey Dan, I wrote a weekly fantasy football this past season for the newspaper in Kauai so I might be interested!

BTW, the award will go to Kobe because it is due. Sort of like the Academy Awards giving the Oscar to an actor who should have won the year (or two) before. Chris Paul should win when you look at the numbers and what he's done with the supporting cast around him IMO.

Dan,

Nice blog. However, I think if you actually look at the reasons you gave for each player, you will see that you actually made a case for Chris Paul. Yet, you chose Kobe Bryant. I am going to say that all the reasons you gave were valid points except #2 for Kobe.

2. He’s been the best player in the NBA the last decade but hasn’t won a NBA MVP award. This is absolutely amazing isn’t it? Bryant has been the best player in the NBA for the last decade and has not won the award yet. Doesn’t he deserve to win at least one?

Two things -- 1. A guy being the best player over a period of ten years does not make him the MVP for a particular year.  2. Not winning the award is not a reason for winning the award.

Both players have, without a doubt, been extremely valuable to their respective teams. However, I must give the nod to Chris Paul. I think that if you go back and look at what you wrote, you will agree.

NBA MVP: Chris Paul or Kobe Bryant?

The main college sports we will be covering is college football and college basketball. We will also follow MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL (only if we find a diehard fan), NASCAR, PGA TOUR, and occasionally other sports like Tennis.  We need as many writers as we can get.
