When is a good time to draft a tight end?

Tuesday's Twitter question @jameyeisenberg: What round will draft a tight end and give me your Top 5 list?

As you can see by my rankings, the Top 5 is Antonio Gates, Dallas Clark, Jason Witten, Jermichael Finley and Vernon Davis. You probably won't find many differences in the Top 5 elsewhere, but after that is where it gets interesting.

I expect Owen Daniels to bounce back strong as long as he returns to Houston as a free agent, and Rob Gronkowski should play well again in his second year with the Patriots. I also like Jimmy Graham as a huge sleeper, and Zach Miller and Brandon Pettigrew also have plenty of upside.

After that, we're talking about the veteran guys of Tony Gonzalez, Kellen Winslow and Chris Cooley. I'd stay away from Marcedes Lewis because 2010 was a fluke with all the touchdowns. And don't be surprised if Brent Celek has a rebound year with the Eagles after getting a full offseason with Michael Vick.

As for when to draft a tight end, if you want one of the Top 5 guys you have to pull the trigger in Round 4 in most leagues. But if you're like me and tend to wait, which I'll do this year for someone like Graham in Round 6 or 7, then practice patience when drafting tight ends.

Here are your thoughts ...

@bsmurray06 Gates, Finley, or Clark round 4. Witten, Gonzalez round 5.

@rockhoundlsu Taking in Rd.6, top 5: Gates, Clark, Witten, Davis, and Lewis...yes Marcedes Lewis, pushing Finley to 6th, Gronk to 7th.

@TheRotoCop 1.Gates 2.Finley (if healthy) 3.Witten 4.Z.Miller 5.Gronkowski/Celek toss-up.

@AP_Manning I'm going to wait til at least round 5, but: 1. Gates, 2. Clark, 3. Finley, 4. Davis, 5. Witten

@oCLAYBOYo 6th or later / 1)Finley 2)Gates 3)Clark 4)Witten 5)Davis

@carlgetsmoked in a ppr id take gates in late 4th, clark and finley in early 6

@AgentJR3 late rd, keeping Gates. Gates, witten, Clark, Davis, Finley.

@qcebel Rd 4 late...Finley Gates Clark Rd 5 Davis Cooley

@DirtDogDay 1 Gates 2 Clark 3 Finley 4 Witten 5 Keller/VDavis. Depending on league scoring I'd look around 4 if there is run on WRs.

@chinch77 round 14 out of 16. Wont waste a top pick on TE. If they get hurt, there is no viable replacement.

@gingerdad1 I don't draft TE's b4 the 6-7th rds. Too much volatility in the pos. Gates,Witten,Clark,V Davis, finley r my tops for 2011

@BrandonEichholz Rd.7. 1. Gates 2. Clark 3. Witten 4. Davis 5. Finley

@AntTheSportsGuy I would draft a TE in the 3rd round (standard scoring league). Top 5: Gates, Clark, Finley, Vernon Davis, and Witten

I say when the top 5 tight ends are gone to wait until the end of the draft. At least after round 7. If you are going after a top tight end, better grab him early between rounds 3-5.
