Orlando Magic 2008-09

With the seemingly meaningless signing of third-string PG Mike Wilks and the retirement of Garrity, it seems as the Magic's offseason is complete.

In the lineup for the 2008-09 season we have three Centers, three Point Guards, four Shooting Guards along with 4 SF/PF...

With 14 players all up...

C: Dwight, Foyle, Gortat
PF: Rashard, Battie
SF: Hedo, Cook
SG: Pietrus, Lee, Bogans, Redick.
PG: Nelson, Johnson, Wilks

To me, I can't say that is an NBA championship caliber looking team on paper. That isn't to say we can't do it, I would be happy if we had a lineup like this.....

C: Dwight, actual backup
PF: actual PF, Battie
SF: Rashard or Hedo, Viable backup, Ariza (we shouldn't have traded him) - Cook isn't too bad.
SG: Rashard or Hedo, Pietrus
PG: better PG, Nelson.

I dont mind Nelson as a starter but I think if we knew Dooling, Arroyo would be gone we could have spent a draft pick there or traded up to get one...Can you imagine if we traded Bogans, Redick, Cook etc for a draft pick and got say Jerryd Bayless...? But I guess that's just a pipe-dream seeing as you can't really trade a hunk of junk for something. But Nelson and Bayless...I'd be happy with that.

Nelson and Johnson certainly aren't the strongest pair of PGs you have ever seen but most of the time Hedo brings the ball up anyway. Pietrus brings in defense, but I don't know if he is a starting quality player. I still am not sold on Courtney Lee at all, I have no idea why we would draft a SG but hey I ain't the GM am I? In the SF, PF we have good backups and great starters. If Lewis and Hedo playing the 4 spot worked for us last year, I see no reason why it can't this year.

This year we actually have a decent post PF coming off the bench. A lot of people go, "Battie isn't a gamechanger, it won't make a difference," yes while Battie won't be a gamechanger, he certainly changes our dynamic off the bench. This season we actually have  a viable post player coming off the bench. We can afford to rest Dwight a bit more instead of chomping our nails whne Adonal Foyle is center and a three point shooter at PF. Battie can cover center and Cook can also play a bit of PF. And that is a bit difference in this years Magic.

With Dwight's defense ever improving and Rashard with one season under his belt guarding the 4, and he did an excellent job on Bosh in the first round of the playoffs so long ago. Also Pietrus is coming in as a defensive specialist to guard guys like Wade etc. He may not be the best all-round player but if he can guard Wade and such, why not?

With improved defense and with more options in the post off the bench, other teams can't afford to take the throttle off once. Because this season, even when Dwight is off, we still have options in the post.

Though I might not think our roster is the greatest thing since sliced Lakers but we have a viable shot at ECF and if you have a shot at ECF you always have a shot at the NBA finals. I am hoping for a very realistic 2nd seed in the East this year.

Go Magic!

Orlando Magic 2008-09

Hi Starry, yeah Jameer is okay but isn't the best. But with Hedo bringing the ball up we don't need a top dribbling PG anyway. Just need a shooter and/or passer at the point.

Yes, that is something I forgot to mention in making this blog. Stan Van Gundy. He is a great coach and also the assistant coach, Patrick Ewing deserves some credit for the rapid rise of Dwight Howard....

If Dwight ever, ever, ever gets traded we better be bloody getting LeBron James, Kobe Bryant or Chris Paul.

Of course, I hope that the Magic can dethrone the defending NBA champion Celtics somehwere in the 2009 Eastern Conference playoffs!!!Amen brother....

First of all, I agree with you about Jameer Nelson on your original blog post.  Nelson is okay but he is not really one of the best point guards in the NBA.  Despite that, the Magic will be doing fine anyway as long as they still have Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu on the roster.  Plus, I believe that Stan Van Gundy is one of the good coaches in the NBA.

Personally, I hope that my favorite current NBA player, Dwight, will never go or get traded to the Boston Celtics, which I always despise in my entire life.  He should stay with the Magic organization for at least 10 years or until he retires.  Of course, I hope that the Magic can dethrone the defending NBA champion Celtics somehwere in the 2009 Eastern Conference playoffs!!!

Hey peter, well I would have loved to have a player like Javaris at the Magic. The scary thing is, the very day before the rumour surfaced I suggested that Otis should trade for Javaris....

It doesn't seem like that has worked out...

I actually have Orlando winning the most regular season in the East this year (although I don't think you'll win the East.)

What's up with Javaris to the Magic? That was my favorite trade rumor of the year (would be an incredible growth for both Javaris and the Magic I think.)

LOL....and we could get Kevin Love....haha

I wouldn't want that to happen, because co-GM McHale would trade Dwight to Boston for a bundle of sticks....

Yeah, a new PG isn't a main concern because Hedo brings up the ball and Nelson isn't as bad as people say he is. He was one of our most consistent and solid players in the playoffs last season.

But a new PF is a need, don't see why Hedo and Lewis can't play SG/SF. We should've drafted a PF IMO. I said it all draft, Darrell Arthur and DeAndre Jordan were there for the taking...even with our roster moves we look a whole lot better with Arthur or Jordan than Lee.

Howard / Gortat / Foyle
Battie / Arthur or Jordan
Turk / Cook
Shard / Pietrus / Bogans
Nelson / Johnson

That is a possible NBA championship lineup for me....Defense off the bench, we aren't living and dieing by the three, we have 3 solid post players, a good young foundation, Cook is good off the bench. Battie can cover center, Hedo brings the ball up, that is a solid lineup.

I see you guys fighting it out with the Pistons for the 3rd or 4th seeds. Howard is a beast no question best Center in the NBA. I agree though you guys need a new power forward and a new point guard. I also agree about Bayless and wish that we would have traded are top 2nd round pick are lower one or some role player for Bayless. Bayless will have a great carrer and would be great on any team.

This is just me fantasizing but what if the NBA combined the T-Wolves and the Magic. With Howard and Jefferson anchoring the paint Turk or Lewis taking the SF spot. The other one at SG and than Randy Foye at point guard. Wouldn't that be a great team.
