With the US Open almost here there are a number of stories to be written and questions to be asked? Nadal is number one now and won't lose it here without a major collapse - not likely.  Roger can't pick real points here since he  won last year he is just defending those points.  It really does't matter to him if he becomes number one again.  Winning slams is really all he really cares about  now.  What better goal now than to win the open.  That would give him 13 and put him nearer the goal of overtaking Sampras who has 14.  Tennis is all about confidence and whether Roger can put it together is anybodys guess.  My thinking is he can lose in an early round because that's where it will be scary for him.  If he makes it to quarters he will probably have the confidence built up to meet Nadal in the final.  Then it will come down to a war of nerves which most people will pick Nadal to win.

What about dark horses? This is always the fun part.  Will someone come out of the pack to make a big run to the finish.  Tsonga did it at the Australian open.  The guy who has been making a big splash recently is Juan Martin Del Potro.  He has been on fire and forgotton how to lose in the last several weeks.  Then theres Andy Murray.  He is up to number six and knocked off his old friend Novak Djokovic in Cincinnatti.  Can Any Roddick make some noise.  He thinks the U.S. Open is his best slam chance since he has home court and he skipped Beijing to be fresh for this.  The problem is he has lost in some early rounds recently to stay a little too fresh.  His confidence is not on top.  James Blake is also a big Apple favorite and played some great tennis at the olympics.

On the women's side you have the usual suspects jockeying for position.  Ivanovic is back on top and Jankovic and the allways dangerous Williams sisters can't be counted out.  For a dark horse Caroline Wozniacki has been showing some great tennis winning 2 tournaments this month at the age of 18.

Who do you pick to win this thing?  What say you?

Federer did win a gold medal in the Olympics, so it wasn't a complete bust for him. I think that should help ease some of the pressure that he is putting on himself. He shouldn't have any issues in the early rounds because this is a best of 5 set grand slam, so some lesser name player would have to win 3 sets off of him, while playing on center court (that in itself can be very intimidating).

People forget that despite losing in Wimbledon to Nadal, before the final he was mowing down the competition. The US Open should be the same way. He should essentially cruise into the Quarters and might get tested there.

I haven't seen the odds yet, but I would assume that Federer is the favorite, and rightfully so. He's still king of the US Open and until he gets dethroned on this surface, he should remain just that.

As for the women's draw, I think Ivanovic is highly over-rated! I was not surprised that she lost at Wimbledo. The round yes, but losing, no. She doesn't have the consistency to win, IMO. I think that despite the Williams Sisters being big fan favorites, I think this is Jankovic's tournament.

I haven't seen any of the draws just yet so I may change my opinions (on the women's side) when I do see them.

I think the only thing that is guaranteed on mens side is that Nadal wont win it this year. I am still not conviced he can win it all on fast hard courts. Although he has been given a great draw this year. He shouldn't have any issues until R16 when he should face James Blake and the question there is which James shows up (almost like good Rex and bad Rex and as I type, he just lost the second set to Donald Young...UGH). After that he has another potential test in David Nalbandian if he makes it that far. With Ferrer not making it past Andy Murray, the semis should be fun with Rafa (if gets past blake and/or Nalbandian) and Murray. Any of these three should be able to beat Rafa on these courts. If he gets to the final, Roger or Djopker should beat him there (I like Roddick, but just not playing like he can beat all three consecutively).

Really I think Djoker will split the slams this year with Rafa. He has a bit more momentum and better play right now than Roger and Roddick. He is also a better hard courter than Rafa.

For the women, I see Safina beating Ana in quarters and then losing to either Serena or Venus in semis (Safina cannot match power with the Williams sisters and experience counts for something too). In the bottom half, Dementieva got tons of help from Marakova when she beat Chakvetadze, but she should still lose to Kuznetsova (rematch of 04 final) in semis. Dementieva's serve isnt taken advantage of enough and Sveta has the ability to eat it for lunch. That bottom quarter should go to Lindsay if her body holds up or Jelena and then it should be a great semi with the winner playing either Serena or Venus.

I cannot pick a winner b/tw four of them (Serena, Venus, Lindsay, Jelena), but then again Svetlana is a dark horse. I would be surprised if anyone other than these 5 win it.
