Oh yeah, almost forgot, like most, the return of the most un-cared about sport in the United States! The National Hockey League opens play tomorrow with the Tampa Bay Lightning against the New York Rangers from Prague, Czech Republic.  Yet you wouldn't hardly know it according to most sports sites. There had been little talk of the NHL on any sports stations. There is still no big TV contract for the sport and it's a shame.

I am looking forward to watching hockey tomorrow. I can't wait to see how Barry Melrose handles the new look Tampa Bay Lightning this year. I want to see the play of the #1 pick in the NHL draft Steven Stamkos. I am hoping for a resurgence from the MVP line of Vinny Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis and Vinny Prospal.

Just wondering if anyone else knew that the NHL actually started tomorrow.

I am really excited to see Kyle Turris play a full year in the league. Peter Mueller did an exceptional job last year as a rookie, and if he and Turris develop, we can expect some great lines in the future. Daniel Carcillo will be interesting - I have not decided if I like him or not - last year he tended to spend way too much time in the penalty box and came close to leading the league despite being out with an injury for a month.

Olli Jokinen can only help Shane Doan based on experience alone. The Coyotes as a team don't pack big offensive threats, but can go off in a game and score a lot of goals. I think Jokinen can help take some pressure off Doan on the #1 line, and help bring a veteran calming presence.

They definitely will be interesting and fun to watch and maybe they will give a run at making the playoffs and sustain it, unlike last year.

Sorry Sunnyside. I'm afraid not. Without the NHL package, or a cable provider that provides MSG in the New York area, you won't be able to see it. It stinks!

Are those games to be aired on TV at all?

Eagle - I know you cant expect great things from the Yotes this year, but you have to be somewhat excited about players like Turris, Carcillo and Maihalek? I think Jokinen will add a few points but don't see his suuporting linemates adding big numbers.

Well at least I know there is one other Hockey fan out there? No one has any input on their teams this year?

Good points Eagle. It is a shame that so much airtime is wasted on useless things. Without the hockey package from DirecTV, you are not going to see hockey in the states except for the few games carried by the Networks and Versus. I have had the NHL package for quite a few years now, and wouldn't be without it.

Did you know? Yes NHL play does start tomorrow.

Hooray for the start of Hockey season - now if only it was televised in Arizona or I could get access to any of the NHL Center Ice packages. While the season may start tomorrow, I will not be able to see a game on TV until October 11 - even though my homestate Coyotes have now played 6 preseason games - not a one has been televised instead being pre-empted for replays of the Eric Byrnes show from April, a Northern Arizona University/Portland State Volleyball game played in the last week of august of early september (has now been replayed on FSN-AZ 8 times since the game occurred, BDSP (a complete waste of airwaves if you ask me) and the other mundane programming that as sports fans we expect to see on a sports network during primetime.

Ever since NBC only cared about Hockey in march and april, and ESPN decided not to renew for wednesday and thursday night hockey double headers - the sports commercial availability in the US stinks. How I wish I still resided in Canada where I could catch hockey night every night from October till the Stanley Cup.

It is a shame that the Scripps Spelling Bee now gets more coverage and media attention than Hockey in the US.

Here is wishing Melrose and his mullett the best in his coaching debut. Go Yote, Go Leafs!!
