College Conferenes: Who's #1?

Alright so we all know the debate about the strengths of the Division 1 conferences, everybody thinks their conference is #1 or #2, (except the Pac 10 and SEC people who all think they're #1.

So LAwish (West Coast) and I (East Coast) decided to put the question to bed.

I'm going to break this down similar to the way I broke my NCAA tournament formula down (which I remind you picked the eventual Champion, several upsets, and  near upsets, and 3 of the final 4 check it out)

Alright so LA and I went through the 6 major conferences, and for the heck of it, threw in the top 3 mid-major conferences, the WAC, C-USA, and the Mountain West Conference. We put each team in one of these 5 categories.

(you may want to skip down to the conference rankings if you don't care how it was done)

5 Categories:

Big Boys- which I defined as National Title Contenders and teams that will not fall out of the top 10

Solid teams- which are teams that will likely not drop out of the rankings

Average teams
- which are teams that could get into the rankings at the back end or stay just outside the rankings

Bad teams- teams that likely aren't thinking about the rankings but may get to 6 wins to be bowl eligible

JV- teams that aren't thinking bowl game at all, 3 wins would be great

We each did our lists seperately so that we didn't influence each other.

When we did our lists I realized that we would disagree about some teams so for scoring purposes 4 sub-categories were composed.

Sub-Categories:

Studs- teams that fall between Big boy's and solid teams

Good teams
- teams that fall between Solid and Average teams

Mediocre teams- teams that fall between average and bad

Garbage- teams that fall between bad and JV

Here is how the teams came out:

Team Rankings:

Big Boys : USC (west), Missouri, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia

Studs: LSU, Texas, Oregon, BYU, Utah, TCU, Wisconsin, Penn St., Virginia Tech, Fresno St., USF, West Virginia, East Carolina

Solid: Kansas, Arizona St., Illinois, Ohio St., Clemson, Wake Forest, Boise St.

Good: Auburn, Alabama, Texas Tech, Cal, Oregon St., Nevada

Average: USC (east), Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Purdue, Michigan St., North Carolina, Florida St., UCF, Tulsa Tulane, Rutgers

Mediocre: Oklahoma St., Arizona, Kentucky, Texas A&M, UCLA, UNLV, New Mexico, Michigan, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Boston College, San Jose St, Southern Miss, Rice, UConn, Pitt, Cincinnati

Bad: Ole Miss, Kansas St., Colorado, Nebraska, Stanford, San Diego St., Northwestern, Miami, Houston, Marshall, Louisville

Garbage: Washington, Arkansas, Miss. St., Air Force, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Duke, Virginia, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, New Mexico St., SMU

JV: Washington St, Iowa St., Baylor, Wyoming, Colorado St., N.C. State, Idaho, Utah St.,UTEP, Memphis UAB, Syracuse

Now we differed on how to score the conferences because LA, realizing some of his conferences were top top heavy wanted to give more weight to the top teams, so I went with 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 syestem, while LA went with a 10, 7, 4, 2, 1 system (with teams in the sub-categories getting the average of the two they're between)

Here's how that shook down

Bib and LA's Conference rankings

Mine
1. SEC      3.4583333
2. Pac-10   3
3. Big 12    2.9166667
4. Big 10    2.9090909
5. Big East 2.8125
6. ACC       2.6666667
   MWC      2.6666667
8. WAC      2.3333333
9. C-USA    2.25

LA's
1. SEC       4.9583333
2. Pac-10   4.7
3. Big 12    4.5833333
4. Big 10    4.4090909
5. Big East 4.125
6. MWC     4.1111111
7. WAC     3.89999999
8. ACC      3.79166667
9. C-USA   2.91666667

So the SEC clearly the top league, followed by the Pac-10, Big 12, and Big 10

after that it get's muddy

College Conferenes: Who's #1?

Ok for starters, you and LA should be doing your damn homework instead of conducting science experiments on college football...with that said...good freekin job guys.  I think though its hard to stick to this system until you get to week 6 or 7, because honestly you get teams that are looking like studs in Week 4 that completely drop the ball in the second half of the season.

Unscientifically, right now its easy to say the SEC and Big 12 are co #1's.  And I'll tell you why, the SEC by far has the most superior defenses in the land.  The Big 12 on the other hand have much better offenses.  On that fact alone its hard to say which conference is better (though I would honestly lean towards he SEC myself).  Being from NY, college football is a joke in this state so I can stay fairly neutral on this.  My favorite college football team is the Miami Hurricanes (who, after last weeks road with at Texas A&M, dont deserve to be listed as bad) so I don't really have allegence to one conference (bc honestly Miami should still be in the Big East and the move to the ACC was a joke).

I do think the ACC is a little underrated.  As Mpack said, Wake Forest and Clemson are studs, UNC, Maryland, Va Tech, Ga Tech, and Florida State are no pushovers.  I also think the PAC 10 is seriously overrated (sorry LA).  USC aside, who I do think is he best team in the land right now (so not sorry anymore LA), there is no stud teams in the PAC 10.  Cal got thumped by Maryland, Oregon lost at home to Bosie State, Arizona State lost to UNLV at home, and the bottom half of that conference (Oregon St, Washington St, Washington, UCLA) are jokes.

So for the love of god boys, get the PAC-10 far away from that number 2 spot...they dont even deserve to be number 3, Id give that right now, even with a shakey Ohio State team, to the Big 10.

Let me know when we do this science experiment for college basketball, i think you guys need some neutral bodies in the mix

College Conferenes: Who's #1?

Big Boys-  There are only 3 conferences that have anyone worthy of playing for the National Championship and the ACC is not one of them.  SEC, Big 12 and Pac 10 in that order.

Alright here are my ACC rankings for this week

Atlantic

Wake Forest is a Stud team that can beat almost any team in the country.  The Swiss are not the bottom feeders of the ACC anymore.

Clemson is a Stud team that has all of the talent in the world.  Their Coaching on the other hand needs work.  Look for them to get into the top 15 before a meltdown at the end of the year.

Maryland is an avereage team that can pull a couple of upsets, but will not make it into the top 25 this year.

Boston College is a Mediocre team that needs to get a QB in order to get things roling

Florida State is Bad.  Bobby Bowden should quit and let someone else take over.

NC State is bad.  A great win against ECU this weekend should raise their confidence and look for Wilson to improve as a QB they could get to mediocre.

Costal

VA Tech is a stud team Frank Beamer is a great coach and will keep this team in the hunt for another ACC title

Ga Tech is

lol, I wasnt going to accuse you of homerism

but since you have two votes and you felt you had to qualify placing them there do you want to give them one vote for solid and one for big boy?

Before you accuse me of homerism by putting Texas in the Big Boys cat, let me explain.

Texas is hitting on all cylinders right now, there running game and passing game is doing very well. Colt McCoy is playing better than ever. The only weakness Texas has is there pass coverage. Texas also plays Oklahoma and Mizzou back to back next month. If they can beat one of those teams they will stay in the top 10 and win out. If they lose both of those games they will drop put stay ranked and still win out.
