Since the draft is a week away, I thought it would be nice to show my list of the biggest draft busts in NFL history. Feel free to comment and portray your own list if you like. Here's my countdown:

Twenty Biggest Draft Busts

Other factors I would consider are:  whether the player was drafted with the team's regular pick and, if not, what they gave up to acquire that pick.  I haven't made up my own list yet, but with the factors I mentioned I'm going to add a name (someone I'm surprised Jelly didn't mention):  Mike Phipps.  Stats with the Browns:  40 TDs, 81 INTs, under 50% completions, they gave up (rightly) just when he should have been entering his prime.  And they gave up a Hall-of-Fame receiver (Paul Warfield) to acquire the pick with which they drafted him.

As I posted on a similar thread I must have a completely different definition of what constitutes a bust/flop than the people who've nominated Jeff George.  I mean, over 27,000 yards, 154 TDs is closer to a Hall-of-Famer than to a complete bust in my book.

Twenty Biggest Draft Busts

All right, pretty good list...BUT, All of Packer fans remember one #1 pick who tanked even BIGGER than Mandarich. At least Tony went on to have a decent career. The BIGGEST bust ever in Packer history was  RANDY WRIGHT.

Twenty Biggest Draft Busts

Great list cg ;) ... Great blog!

  • Lawrence Phillips, RB, Nebraska
    1. This guy ... I really liked him. He had so much potential, but just kept messing up, and just didn't get it. I don't know if it was a maturity issue with him, or just a lack of discipline? Too bad!
I think that some of the guys on this list performed at the level that they did in college and HS, because they were juiced. They got to the pros, and stopped. So did their career. Just an opinion though.

    Twenty Biggest Draft Busts

Troy Williamson was the number 7 overall pick 3 years ago. I am surprised another Viking fan didn't bring him up.

Here's why you got to love Bosworth. He started calling Elway "horseteeth" and was tormenting the Bronco fans. When the Seahawks went to Mile High Stadium, a very popular shirt said "No BOZo's" with a line through Bosworths head. Those shirts were made by a company owned by Bosworth, so he made money off  Bronco fans that were pissed at him. That man could sure self promote.

    Twenty Biggest Draft Busts

I want to compliment you on a well thought out listing.

I am sure every fan of all the teams could add a player from their own favorite team to your list. In some of the cases the fault lies witht he team drafting and not with the player. I will use Rocky Thompson a New York Giants pick from the early 70's as an example. No other team had him as highly rated  as the Giants to use a top ten pick on him. Was it his fault he was a total bust ? Even as bad as he was he probably not as big a bust as those listed by college girl.
