As a Raider fan I absolutely hate to say it but...

John Elway

I am not sure if there was as good of a quarterback on pure overall athletic ability.  His quickness, to go along with his legendary arm.  He made throws on that run that some couldn't make on the practice field.  How many come from behind 4th quarter drives?  During the lean years in Denver...did anyone ever do more with less?  Great quarterbacks are almost always a product of their environment.  This guy spent the first few years putting up big numbers while on the run because they had no line.

Joe Montana is (still a good quarterback don't get me wrong) completely over-rated.  Jerry Rice turned how many 5 yard slants into 20+ yard TD's?  I would complete 65% of my passes if I had Roger Craig standing there in the original West Coast Offense.  Please someone tell me I am not the only one out here that thinks this......?

I am going with Broadway Joe for the following reasons.

  1. Namath was a bigger part of his teams success. Staubach had a much more talented team around him and Namath still managed more career yards.
  2. He was a much more charismatic guy. He was much more willing to carry the load publically, taking a lot of the pressure off his teammates.
  3. Anyone who can get on TV drunk and shamelessly flirt with Suzy Kolber has to get bonus points.
