Big Brown is the latest horse to complete the first two legs of a Triple Crown. A dominant performance in the Preakness makes me feel both exited and confident that there will be a new Triple Crown winner. I have watched the big name horse races since I was a kid (inherited from my father) and every time a horse comes along I cant help but get excited.
Horse racing is a pure sport, in that the outcome is left to the athletes (usually) and it is very basic, the first to cross the finish line is the winner. There are some great stories in the sport as well. Seabiscuit has had the most publicity in mainstream cinema but the stories of Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Citation, Smarty Jones, and Barbaro are all great subjects as well. Spectacular Bid, War Emblem and Smarty Jones have all come close to the Triple in recent years but have fallen short. Affirmed was in fact the last horse to win the Crown back in 1978.
I think the story of Big Brown and his troubled trainer Richard Dutrow is a great one, I only hope it has a chapter titled "2008 The Triple Crown Season".
