Quarterfinals for you Favorite Movie Stars Ever

Posted on: September 7, 2008 11:06 pm

Well it is time to begin the voting for round 3. We had a few upsets again, and the match ups look even tougher this round. Not all of the voting went the way I hoped or expected. We did have less voting in this round and as close as some the battles were I wonder how different the results might have been with the same turnout as last week.

As always first here are the results from round 2 with my comments that I hope you find at least a little bit amusing and or entertaining.

1)Tom Hanks 23 vs. 17)Cary Grant  8 Forrest Gump defeats Mr. Lucky. This would have been a very tough match up for me to vote on as I really enjoy both their work. Grant was great in such a wide range of roles from Hitchcokc thrillers to screwball comedies.
2)Harrison Ford 24 vs. 18)Dustin Hoffman 7 Dr. Jones, Hans Solo and Jack Ryan way too much for the Rain Man and Tootsie
3)Denzel Washington  21  vs. 19)Gene Hackman 10 Just like in Crimson Tide Denzel comes out on top in this match up.
4)Paul Newman 17 vs. 13)Mel Gibson 14  William Wallace's cries of Freedom go for naught against Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy
5)Al Pacino  18 vs. 12)Jimmy Stewart 13 Oscar winner for playing a Colonel beats real life General in a battle of 2 true superstars
6)Robert DeNiro  23 vs. 11)Robert Redford 8  Crazed Taxi Driver takes the Sundance Kid for a long ride
7)Jack Nicholson  19 vs. 10)Sean Connery 12 Jack might be the only man as cool as 007 as Bond goes down.
8)Clint Eastwood  14  vs. 9)Morgan Freeman 17 I guess it takes God to take down Clint as he did too good a job directing his good buddy.

Actresses:
1)Jodie Foster 25 vs. 16)Demi Moore 6  Clarice defeats G.I. Jane easily
2)Julia Roberts 23 vs. 15)Rita Hayworth 8 Erin Brockovich defeats Shawshank poster girl
3)Sophia Loren 13 vs. 14)Meryl Streep 18 Incredible actress beats legendary Italian beauty
4)Sandra Bullock 15 vs. 13)Marilyn Monroe 14  Speed kills this legendary beauty instead of a overdose this time.
5)Katherine Hepburn 20 vs. 12)Audrey Hepburn 10  Katherine the Great defeats her adorable namesake
6)Angelina Jolie 18 vs. 11)Renee Zwelleger 13 Mrs. Smith  takes out Bridget Jones
7)Susan Sarandan 15 vs. 10)Julie Andrews 16  Mary Poppins eeks out a win over the Minor League's most famous groupie
8)Halle Berry 13 vs. 9)Elizabeth Taylor 17  La Liz adds the lovely Ms. Berry to her list of victims including her too numerous to count ex husbands.

Here are the match ups for the Quarterfinals. Man are some of these tough.

1)Tom Hanks vs. 9)Morgan Freeman
2)Harrison Ford  vs. 7)Jack Nicholson
3)Denzel Washington vs. 6)Robert DeNiro
4)Paul Newman  vs. 5)Al Pacino

Actresses:
1)Jodie Foster  vs. 9)Elizabeth Taylor
2)Julia Roberts vs. 10)Julie Andrews
6)Angelina Jolie vs. 14)Meryl Streep
4)Sandra Bullock vs. 5)Katherine Hepburn

Voting for this round will close at 11 PM EST on this coming Sunday.
Please try and remember to rate your fellow posters as I am sure they will do the same for you. As usual I will only vote in the case of any ties.  Thanks again.

Quarterfinals for you Favorite Movie Stars Ever

-Hey Yank!

-Some tough matchups here in the actor's category, to be sure....

1)Tom Hanks vs. 9)Morgan Freeman -This was very tough, as both are great...  But for me at least, Morgan has had the most memorable roles, and so it tips the scales in his favor...
2)Harrison Ford  vs. 7)Jack Nicholson -Again, very difficult.  My logic?  See above.  I haven't seen many people mention The Fugitive here- kinda surprising.  Definitely one of my favorites, and Ford was great in it (as was, of course, Tommy Lee Jones).
3)Denzel Washington vs. 6)Robert DeNiro  -I'm gonna go with Denzel in this one, one of the better actors of his generation, to be sure, IMO.
4)Paul Newman  vs. 5)Al Pacino -Yet another tough call, but all in all, I just prefer Paul...

-I find the actress category again a tad easier (as it seems others have, as well), but,

1)Jodie Foster  vs. 9)Elizabeth Taylor  -This one was not so easy...   Jodie by a hair.
2)Julia Roberts vs. 10)Julie Andrews -This one was easy...
6)Angelina Jolie vs. 14)Meryl Streep  -This one was even easier...
4)Sandra Bullock vs. 5)Katherine Hepburn  -And this one was easier still.  I'd have voted against Sandra no matter who she faced-  this was no contest...

-Thanks again, Yank, for a great job & great moderating.

-I also noted the "best vs. favorite" thing, and have mostly opted for "best" unless it came down to personal faves...  I look forward to the results here!

Quarterfinals for you Favorite Movie Stars Ever

I'm a late comer to this voting process but its a great subject.  I only wish I had been on board earlier as my votes could have possibly helped to avert some of the travesties that have occurred....Julia Robers?  Really.  Julia Robers?  Angelina Jolee?  Did anyone who voted for her actually see Mr. and Mrs. Smith?  Ok.  Here are my votes:

Tom Hanks.  The guy made you cry for a fricken volley ball.  A long list of great movies to his credit and he is still willing to be silly on SNL.

Harrison Ford.  I agree with Kevin Smith.  Han Solo is a pimp.  Lea told him she loved him and the pimps response?  "I know."  Awesome.

Robert DeNiro.  Denzel has done some great movies but DeNiro has been is many all-time classics.

Paul Newman.  Its probably not the popular pick and I'm pretty sure Pacino will win running away but I love Paul Newman.  Cool Hand Luke is just a fantastic movie.

The ladies:

Elizabeth Taylor.  She was smokin hot back in the day and her movies have stood the test of time.

Julie Andrews.  Hot and talented vs. just hot for Julie Roberts.

Meryl Streep.  Not even close here.

Katherine Hepburn.  Again, not even close.  This might be the only forum on the planet where Sandra Bullock gets to be compared to Katherine Hepburn.

There they are.  My votes.  It will be interesting to see who moves on.

Actors:

9) Morgan Freeman - Its the voice, definitely the voice

2) Harrison Ford - Even late in his career, hes still an action star

6) Robert DeNiro - The scene from "Heat" at the coffee diner was what won me over here

5) Al Pacino - Look above, same reason

Actresses:

1) Jodie Foster - I believe she went to Vega in "Contact"

2) Julia Roberts - Its all in her smile

14) Merly Streep - Her performances outweigh the Tomb Raider

4) Sandra Bullock - Love Potion No.9, enough said lol

winning I too favor the "great" in most cases. A few of the actresses who have made it this far would not have gotten my vote beyond the first round.

Regarding some of those who did not make it this far they just ran into some tough match ups. A perfect example of this is Audrey Hepburn meeting her namesake in the last round. I agree that the age of many of the voters surely has effected the results. Bogart and Bergman, for example, could have made it this far just on Casablanca alone.
