Time To Vote For The Greatest Acts In Rock

Posted on: April 28, 2008 11:24 pm

Well folks the brackets are now set.

I was surprised by the lack of votes for quite a few bands. I knew not all of my favorites would make it the list of 16 but I did think some of them would get more support. About 90 Bands were mentioned as well about 60 solo acts among all the postings.

4 of the 16 in the solo category could have been in the Bands category but I followed the way the votes were
cast. Tom Petty for some reason received 90% of his votes as a solo act and Carlos Santana got 75% of his that way.

Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Springsteen had enough votes to make the brackets and be seeded in the top half of both categories. I used my editorial powers to decide to put them in the solo category only.

Here are the first round match ups for both categories. The seeds are in parenthesis. Please just list your choice in each of the match ups. The voting for the first round will close on Sunday at 11:00 pm est. I will be posting the next round as soon as I can afterwards.

Thanks to all of for your participation as well as your comments.

Time To Vote For The Greatest Acts In Rock

Great idea for a blog. If you are still accepting votes, here is my entry. Sorry, I haven't read through all of the comments, didn't want to influence my answers.

The Beatles (1) vs. The Doors (16) - I love the Doors, but the Beatles win hands down.
The Rolling Stones (2) vs. The Grateful Dead (15) - Never liked the Grateful Dead, so the Stones win Easily
The Who (3) vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd (14) - Great matchup, but got go with the higher seeded The Who.
The Eagles (4) vs. Creedence Clearwater Revival (13) - Upset pick here, CCR wins.
Led Zeppilin (5) vs. Aerosmith (12) - Very tough choice, Zepplin had alot of good music, but so has Aerosmith. Couldn't make up my mind, Zepplin wins the coin toss to advance.
Pink Floyd (6) vs. Rush (11) - I prefer Rush over Pink Floyd, so in another upset Rush advances.
AC/DC (7) vs. The Allman Brothers Band (10) - No Brainer - AC/DC
U 2 (8) vs. Cream (9) - Not a fan of either, but U2 wins

Eric Clapton (1) vs. Ozzy Osbourne (16) - Going back to my headbanger youth on this one, Ozzy.
Bruce Springsteen (2) vs. Chuck Berry (15) - Bruce, I like Chuck, but Bruce advances
Jimi Hendrix (3) vs. John Lennon (14) - Legend vs Legend, but I will go with Jimi since John already is advancing with the Beatles
Elvis Presley (4) vs. Johnny Cash (13) - Ugh, you're killing me here. Who to choose? Coin toss winner: Elvis
Bob Dylan (5) vs. Tom Petty (12) - I can't stand Dylan, Petty wins.
Neil Young (6) vs. Roy Orbison (11) - Niel Young, no particular reason.
Billy Joel (7) vs. Carlos Santana (10) - "I am the Entertainer", and I advance to the next round, Billy Joel
Elton John (8) vs. Stevie Ray Vaughn (9) - Elton John in a close one.

The Rolling Stones (2)  - Stones are pedestrian but beat the dead
Lynyrd Skynyrd (14)  - not even close
The Eagles (4)  - ccr's sounds like 60's technology, Eagles sound current.
Led Zeppilin (5) - love aerosmith but Zep is best band ever
Pink Floyd (6) - Rush my first concert but no contest
AC/DC (7) - best metal band ever (even when listed in 100 years)
U 2 (8) vs. Cream (9) - tough ouch this is hard, my god they are both great, go with U2 only because they dominated for so many years but cannot bring myself to delete Cream who were top 5 when music was great

Chuck Berry (15) - Springsteen is pop in my mind never bought an album but seen live 5 times

Time To Vote For The Greatest Acts In Rock

There is one more thing I want to point out. All the seeding was based solely on the number of votes the Bands / Artists received in the nomination portion of this contest. I was very surprised by the seeding myself.

The votes in some of the match ups are very close and based on the seeding it a few upsets are very possible.

I will post the vote totals when I  the next round's match ups are revealed. There will be no reseeding based on the voting in this round. This means that the winner of the Beatles/Doors will take on the U2/Cream winner and so on.

Time To Vote For The Greatest Acts In Rock

El Gigante that is true but just getting the field down to 16 was plenty of work. Based on the votes I received on the blog  Pearl Jam for one wouldn't have made into a field of 32. Also based on the difference in the number of votes between the top vote getters and those that would have been lets say seeded 21 - 32 the results would have been a forgone conclusion. The last 2 spots were decided by a run off of those that would have filled the rest of the spots.

These were not my choices but those of all the participants. Of the 10 I nominated a few didn't even come close to making it in.

I do appreciate your comments and your participation.
