The Best In Television

I want to thank all of you who helped make my first effort at blogging a rewarding experience for me. I did enjoy reading most of the comments the blog generated about the musicians who were nominated and being voted on as the best acts in Rock & Roll history.

I asked for and received a few suggestions for what type of competition would be a good follow up. With several friends of mine currently running other musical themed bracket competitions here I decided to go in a different direction with this one and focus on a subject that most of you are very familiar with, television. Television has bought us events that will remain in our memories for as long as we live, both joyous and horrendous. It has made you laugh and cry as well as taken you to places you could only dream of visiting in person. Just think of the musical acts you would never have seen perform if not for them having appeared on television.

Television, especially with the explosion of the number of specialty channels on cable, has something for people of all ages, tastes and backgrounds.

I am asking the readers of this blog to name their 10 favorite sitcoms of all time as well as their 10 favorite dramas and westerns. I will then set up brackets and we can do the tourney style competition. I would also like you to name the 5 most memorable things you have ever seen on the tube. I will compile the numbers on those and list what the group comes up with as a top 10. I know the submissions for the most memorable will depend a lot on the ages of who replies. If you were born much after 1960 Neil Armstrong's walking on the moon will not be on your list.

If this blog is as popular as I hope I will seed the top 32 nominees for sitcoms and dramas. I am guessing for westerns I will not get enough of a variety of choices to seed 32. Time will tell.

Please try and remember to rate your fellow posters efforts here and even add them to your favorites list if you so desire.

Thanks in advance for your participation.

Yank,

I will give this a shot, 103 replies, sure there will be duplicates, but hopefully I mention a few shows I liked that others will recall.

Comedy's:

Taxi, Barney Miller, News Radio, Lotsa Luck, Flip Wilson, Laugh In, Hogan's Heroes, Three's Company, Room 222.

Sci FI/Drama:

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Combat, Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Petrocelli, Kaz.

Here is one I like to point out, best game show clue EVER, Password, circa 1970's, Betty White. You had 3 clues to get the contestant to say the password to win the big prize.  Her first clue was:  John. Her second clue was Wilkes.  Naturally the contenstant got the word "booth".

The Best In Television

I'm not much of a t.v. watcher (for example... up until last year I didn't watch t.v. for about 7 years). So... I'll go with what I like now, and what I liked before my 7 year hiatus.

Sitcoms:

1.) Scrubs

2.) M.A.S.H.

3.) Seinfeld

4.) Gilligan's island

5.) Cheers

6.) Arrested Developement

7.) Happy Days

8.) Mork & Mindy

9.) The Muppet Show

10.) WKRP in Cincinnati

Dramas:

1.) C.S.I. (Las Vegas... the original!)

2.) Nip/Tuck

3.) Dexter

4.)Twin Peaks

5.) Columbo

6.) 21 Jump Street

7.) Dead Like Me

8.) My So Called Life

9.) China Beach

10.) The Wonder Years (I had to make room in my favorite Sitcoms for The Muppet Show, and sometimes this show was a drama)

Compelling Moments (Mostly News):

- Challenger Shuttle explosion.

- O.J. Simpson Ford bronco Chase and Game 5 of the NBA Finals, NBC went picture-in-picture showing the infamous Bronco chase alongside the Knicks and the Houston Rockets.

- Rodney King beating and the L.A. riots.

- 9/11 (Twin Towers and Pentagon) footage

- The Fall of Communism and the Berlin Wall

- Tiananmen Square protests

- Pan Am Flight 103 bombing

Thanks for your contribution Rhino. The tallying of the nominations has been easier than I expected since I figured out an easy way to do it. The voting in the brackets will be more work than setting the brackets.
