The Best In Television

I want to thank all of you who helped make my first effort at blogging a rewarding experience for me. I did enjoy reading most of the comments the blog generated about the musicians who were nominated and being voted on as the best acts in Rock & Roll history.

I asked for and received a few suggestions for what type of competition would be a good follow up. With several friends of mine currently running other musical themed bracket competitions here I decided to go in a different direction with this one and focus on a subject that most of you are very familiar with, television. Television has bought us events that will remain in our memories for as long as we live, both joyous and horrendous. It has made you laugh and cry as well as taken you to places you could only dream of visiting in person. Just think of the musical acts you would never have seen perform if not for them having appeared on television.

Television, especially with the explosion of the number of specialty channels on cable, has something for people of all ages, tastes and backgrounds.

I am asking the readers of this blog to name their 10 favorite sitcoms of all time as well as their 10 favorite dramas and westerns. I will then set up brackets and we can do the tourney style competition. I would also like you to name the 5 most memorable things you have ever seen on the tube. I will compile the numbers on those and list what the group comes up with as a top 10. I know the submissions for the most memorable will depend a lot on the ages of who replies. If you were born much after 1960 Neil Armstrong's walking on the moon will not be on your list.

If this blog is as popular as I hope I will seed the top 32 nominees for sitcoms and dramas. I am guessing for westerns I will not get enough of a variety of choices to seed 32. Time will tell.

Please try and remember to rate your fellow posters efforts here and even add them to your favorites list if you so desire.

Thanks in advance for your participation.

ATW  a good guess based on my age but I saw most of them on TBS reruns. It was actually a show that I understand was very good but since I am not a Sci-Fi guy it was the X Files.

"I can honestly say I have watched all but one show you mentioned most of those all of the time."

Which one, let me guess, Saved by the Bell?

Poetz, better late than never. You made the deadline by plenty.

ATW I believe every show that you complained about not being mentioned in your first post here as had at least a couple of nominations. I can honestly say I have watched all but one show you mentioned most of those all of the time.

Already posted with shows that weren't mentioned yet, so now I am posting my top 10 shows. As you can see, I grew up in the 80's so no Mash, Lucy, etc on my lists. Mostly newer shows I think are great.

Family Guy

Cosby Show

Saved by the Bell (hate it now, but loved it growing up with it)

WKRP (seen in reruns)

Night Court

The Sopranos

The SHield

The Wire

Wonder Years

CSI (any)

X Files

The Best In Television

Weighing in a little late here.  IMO, some of the best stuff doesn't fit neatly into a particular genre.  Mentioning a few of my favorites:  Moonlighting (more of a romantic comedy rather than a sitcom); Your Show of Shows (sketch comedy rather than sitcom); Bullwinkle and Friends (animated sketch comedy rather than sitcom).  And for a few not yet mentioned that do fit into the categories:  My World (and Welcome to It) in the sitcom category and The Fugitive in the drama category.

Top 5 moments (in no particular order):

Ruby killing Oswald live

The Beatles at Shea Stadium concert televised live

Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon

Challenger disaster

DaFan , thanks for the kind words and your contributions. I do not mark down for spelling or grammatical errors. I would have to give myself a failing grade if I did.

-Top 5 most memorable moments?  Here goes...

  1. 9/11 -Like watching some over the top 70's disaster film, but having it be very, very real.  The term "shocking" barely touches it...
  2. The Challenger Disaster  -Just when it seemed that space flight was becoming "routine"...
  3. The Patriots Def. the Rams (Super Bowl XXXVI)  -I was sitting in my living room with a couple of old buddies as that kick sailed through the uprights to seal it for the Pats, and I sprung up and shouted at them at the top of my lungs, "I'VE BEEN WAITING 20 F'N YEARS FOR THIS!!!"  I've seldom felt so much sheer joy in a given moment...
  4. Boston Red Sox Def. St. Louis Cardinals in the '04 World Series  -There was no moment of joy for this long-suffering Sox fan in quite the way there was when the Pats won, instead what I felt more resembled disbelief-  it actually took several days for it to really sink in, lol...
  5. Tiannamen Sqaure  -I felt horrible about what happened there, and it haunted me for weeks...  I even dreamt about it afterwards...

-Great job your doing with this, Yank!  You've certainly struck a chord!
