Well we have now reached the quarter finals and the match ups get even tougher. Once again the results of the last round are listed first with the vote totals and the winning show in bold type. You will notice that for the first time I have made a quick comment regarding the results of each match up. Once again not all the match ups have the same amount of total votes. Some voters have left out a few or even not voted at all for certain genres. The match ups for the quarter finals follows. Please feel free to vote even if you have not yet done so. Remember to tell your friends to vote also. As always I will only vote in case of a tie in any match up. I will also do my best to keep my choice a secret if I do need to vote. Quarterfinals for the Best Shows in Television

Thanks once again I thank you for your kind words along with your great comments. You are right that more than a few of my favorites have bitten the dust in the brackets so far. I can say I did watch every show that is left standing.

Do you recall the actor who played the Meathead's Uncle Stash?  What about Archie's editorial on TV about how to prevent airline hijackings?

What about the episode on Taxi that Tom Hanks was a guest star in a flash back about the first time Jim got high in college?

I recall many specific episodes of all these shows. The cross over of the actors who appeared as stars one one these shows but guested on others is amazing. Tom Selleck on Taxi and Ted Danson are but 2 examples.

Quarterfinals for the Best Shows in Television

Yank, you all too well what a GREAT job I think you are doing.  I have to add that I enjoyed YOUR commentary asmuch or more as I do making up my own.   Some of yours, I could have written myself(plagiarism).  Eerie reading your own thoughts.  TWILIGHT ZONE  episode???

Western Bracket:
(1)Gunsmoke
vs. (8)The Big Valley   Tough call, but Lee Majors pulls another show down the tubes.
(2)Bonanza vs.
(10)Maverick   Another tough matchup, Both favorites of mine. I bet that Bret had as many kids as Ben, he just didn't cast them all on the Ponderosa.
(3)The Rifleman vs. (6)Deadwood     Bad Break. Profanity rules again. Al Swearengen has to be the most conflicted character on TV since Tony Soprano in Season 1.
(4)Rawhide vs. (12)The Wild Wild West     As an adult, I know that Rawhide is the better show. Fortunately, I was a kid when I watched TWWW.  I had a James West outfit and boots. Artie was too cool. And Loveless must have died 10 deaths and still showed up.

Drama Bracket:
(1)Hill Street Blues vs.(8)Rockford Files    This really hurts. One of my 5 best shows ever. But without Hill Street, there would be no LA Law, NYPD Blue, Deadwood(check the lineage of Bochco/Milch). HSB changed TV drama forever, not just cop drama. Remember COP ROCK?
(2)NYPD Blue vs. (7)C.S.I.     This just keeps getting harder. I give it to C.S.I. for bringing something to TV we hadn't seen before. NYPD is a real favorite of mine, but basically just Hill Street pushing the envelope of network TV a little further. Still, both shows are GREAT!!
(3)Hawaii Five vs. (27)Magnum PI     Why do we get a Hawaiifest after the last two matchups??!!  Jack Lord's hair is probably funnier that Tom Selleck, but Magnum does have that cool car and a friend with a copter(where the money come from?  I always wanted Magnum to investigate his own past)  Actually, I'm picking Selleck for his guest spots on Rockford!!!!
(4)The Sopranos vs. (21)The Twilight Zone     The Sopranos is still my pick for best ever. Gruesome, profane, story arcs from one season  to another. Joey Pants!!!  Remember when Chris pulled his toupee off!!!  OMG,  LMAO!!!    Then you get an episode like PINE BARRENS. Hard to cut Ron Serling, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Comedy Bracket:
(1)Seinfeld vs.
(9)Taxi    Easy for me, I'm old enough to have watched Taxi before anything else even remotely like it was on TV. Seeing it in reruns makes it lose its context in TV history. I still remember Alex sitting in Rev. Jim's apartment after the fire when only one TV was  still working. How about the tape from Jim's dad with YOU ARE THE SUNSHINE OF MY LIFE on it.  First time I remember a touching comedy moment.
(2)Cheers vs. (7)Andy Griffith   Another agonizing choice. Same premise(wacky characters in a confined area) in a different setting (Mayberry vs. Boston)  I could change my mind easily, but Boston has won enough things lately without booting Barney!!!! If you live where I do, you might habe had THE DARLINGS for neighbors in the 60s.
(3)M*A*S*H vs. (6)Simpsons    The Simpsons are funnier and longer running, but MASH is more historically significant.  I still see Alan Alda walking around in swim fins and wearing Groucho's make up. Can't top that if your from my generation.
(4)All In The Family
vs. (5)Married with Children    The show that makes me think there's a camera hidden in my house finally loses to the MOST IMPORTANT show in tv history. Remember Maude and Archie arguing over whether FDR was a commie??  That debate actually still happens today.  How about Stretch(I think it was him) coming out of the closet???    And who invented the word MEATHEAD???

OK yank, that's all I've got in me today.  Much as I'd like to seed the matchups differently, you have to follow your own guidelines.I suspect you are killing a few of your own childre as well looking at how they worked out. But you play the cards you're dealt. Again, I hope you smiled at least once reading my comments. Thanks for doing this blog. Probably my favorite place to visit.
