Cavalier Roster Breakdown

Posted on: November 5, 2008 7:58 pm
It is already week two of the NBA season and I feel like I am already behind talking about the Cavs. Most people know about LeBron James and if you don’t there is something wrong with you. A lot of people seem to have little knowledge of the rest of the Cavs so I thought we could run down the roster.

Head Coach: Mike Brown

Not my choice of head coaches for the Cavs but has done extremely well for his lack of offensive knowledge.  He is a defensive specialist when it comes to his skill set, he prides himself on not letting the other team score.  If he learned how to make his guys move the ball around more often on offense the Cavs would be a whole lot better.

Point Guard: Mo Williamsplayer photo

People have already anointed him LeBron’s Pippen. We have already heard this before with Larry Hughes and others and nothing has panned out. Things look like they may be different this time around though. Mo can create his own shot which is sorely lacking in the Cavs rotation and can find the open man. The only thing he is lacking to be a well rounded player is solid defense. With Mike Brown as his head coach he is going to consistently get drilled about defense until he learns how to play it.

Shooting Guard: Delonte Westplayer photo

Last year he was traded to the Cavs midseason and split time in between the 1 and 2 spot. With Mo taking over the primary ball handling duties Delonte and work on the small things that make him fit in well with the team. Only being 6’3” it will be hard for him to guard the larger guards who will be able to post up on him whenever they want. His quickness is going to be important for him to stay on top of things.

Small Forward: LeBron Jamesplayer photo

Don’t really need to go into too much detail about him. He is one of the most athletic and gifted players in the league. The offense runs through him 90% of the time which isn’t always a good thing. His defense has been improving as his steals has slowly increased every year. The only problem with his game is his jump shot. He is a very streaky and can go ice cold from outside. One other knock on his game is his free throw abilities. He went 1-5 on opening day against Boston, which will not cut it especially in the final few minutes of a tight game.

Power Forward: Ben Wallaceplayer photo

The heart and soul of the Cleveland defense… at least that is what the Cleveland fans are hoping for this year. He has never been offensive minded nor does he have the ability to make an open jump shot. If there is one thing he will do is show hustle and pound on the opposing team’s big man. So far this year he has looked like the Big Ben of old, putting up 2 blocks and almost 9 boards a game. Not to mention a 5 block performance against the Bobcats.

Center: Zydrunas Illgauskas  player photo

He is known as Z but I like to refer to him as the Lithuanian Assassin. He is one of the best shooting big men in the league. He can and will shoot from anywhere within the three point line and is a threat so you better guard him. He is getting a little old or that is what people say, he is only 33. Early on in his career he either a foot or leg injury constantly and people think he won’t be healthy for long even though he didn’t miss one game last season. He is the main offensive big man for the Cavs so if he goes down for any amount of time there is going to be a huge problem in the paint.

Bench: Anderson Varejaoplayer photo

The number 2 scoring option down low. That just does not sound right whatsoever. Varejao does what he has always done, gone in and given the Cavs quality minutes in the paint. He is an energy man, he will look like a chicken running around with his head cut off half of the time but he gets the job done.

Daniel Gibsonplayer photo

One of two sharp shooters from long range for the Cavs. He has been improving his game during the offseason and has learned to drive to the hole. It isn’t always pretty but defenders can’t guess he is going to shoot a three because he might drive and make them look stupid. Has great knowledge of what LeBron does and is always in position for a pass when needed. Most people underestimate him which is great, just ask the Pistons how 31 points felt in game 6 of the ECF 2 years ago.

Wally Szczerbiakplayer photo

The second of the sharp shooters for Cleveland, he likes to put up 3 pointers whenever he has an open look. He has change his game around a little bit also. So far in 4 games this season he has only taken 6 three pointers while attempting 18 field goals. It seems like Mike Brown might have told everyone it is time to drive to the hoop more.

Rest of the Bench:

Sasha Pavlovic has seen his minutes drop this year, some of it is due to his defensive intensity the other due to his lost shooting touch.  The Cavs brought in a veteran big man, Lorenzen Wright who will be able to put a few minutes per game downlow to be able to give the main 3 big guys rest.  The first round draft pick J.J. Hickson has shown spurts of athleticism so far this preseason and in his limited playing time.  He will hopefully be able to develop into a scoring option in the paint the Cavs so desperately need.
Just a little run down of the main guys for now. I’ll try to keep you guys up to date on how terrific the Cavs are doing this year while they try to get back to the Finals and win a championship for Cleveland.

Nice breakdown. I hope the Cavs can be better than what you said though. But if the players do what you said they should, the Cavs will be a very good basketball team not only this year, but as long as we have LeBron

Cavalier Roster Breakdown

This year does seem pretty good so far.  We did have 3rd quarter lapses in are two losses just like previous seasons.  If we have a strong 3rd quarter every game we should be vying for a top spot in the Eastern Conference.

I enjoyed the Chicago- Cleveland game last night, Cleveland looked good almost the entire night.  Big Z is a beast and I don't understand how people don't see that.  With a 7'2" body and a wingspan the size of a house he always grabs those offensive rebounds.  I think the key is he has learned how to use his length to his advantage while not getting over the back calls against him.

The one game that we've had broadcast down here so far was the Chicago-Cleveland game. Brushing by the fact that if you don't have a good defensive team there is 0 way to stop Lebron, Big Z is still my pick for most underrated player in the NBA. He's lumbering so people sleep on him, but he does a ton for that team, not just hit jump shots. It seem he's always coming up with a big offensive rebound.

I don't know if it's Mo Williams or what but this season really feels different. I feels like it will be special. I really believe this.I do not say this with my homerism glasses on.

This is the year guys!

Cavalier Roster Breakdown

Mike Brown does seem to be doing a pretty good job so far this year.  I like the fact that is has a mind for defense especially since it wins championships.  I think he is beginning to learn what to do and what not to do on offense.  The movement has been a big plus so far, when the ball stops moving or the guys stand still the other team makes a run, just like tonight against Chicago.

I think Ben Wallace might be ready to have the year that Big B has been waiting for.  Szczerbiak does get lost a little bit on switches on the defensive side but his offensive game looks improved this year.  I think when Pavlovic goes into the game he thinks he needs to prove himself and is putting up ill advised shots.

I am looking forward to what this year brings, the Cavs look really sychronized early on.

Cavalier Roster Breakdown

I like Mike Brown as a coach more than the average fan and definitely more than the average Cavaliers fan. I appreciate the fact that he is defensive minded and has the Cavs revolve around that concept. That being said, his offensive strategy is poorly executed, but i can see improvements so far this season. Now while that might be just me being optimistic, i can already see the positive effects from the addition of Mo Williams.

I have been very impressed with Ben Wallace this season thus far. He has displayed shades of his old playing days in D-town....which is absolutely a good thing. I still view Szczerbiak as a liability unless if he is on fire. His lack of defensive prescence is evident when you have him guarding a slasher. Even though Pavlovic isn't the most gifted defensive player, i still like him over Wally....though like you said, Sasha hasn't really produced on the offensive end at all lately.

And yes...LBJ is still King. Nice brief, to the point analysis of the Cavs my friend. This is the year!!
