VOTING FOR THE BEST BRITISH SOLO SONGWRITERS

We have 18 nominees for the best British solo songwriters. Not as many as we had for the Americans, but a goodly number of worthy contenders. I'm sure there are a couple of deserving artists that we've overlooked, but most of the significant songwriters of the original British invasion and a few of the late 70s New Wave/punk movement that transcended that brief moment in history are the main complement of the nominees. As on our last compilation, please try to make ten picks with first place being weighted for 10 points and descending to 1 point for a tenth place vote. Also as before to accomodate any artists that are felt to have been overlooked, everyone is allowed one write in vote of any artist not included in the nominated list no questions asked. Also as before, more than one write in candidate is permitted but must be accompianed by some information explaining why they deserve consideration. I will leave voting open for one week and will compile votes as I did previously. It has been a pleasure to write these posts and to know that ANYBODY has the patience to tolerate my writing style and pompous attitudes. I thank everybody who has chosen to participate both here and in my previous blogs and I have one more catagory planned for my next blog which I should get going this week. Explanations of your voting preferences are quite welcome though not required. Again, thanks to all of you who have been here and I'll see you on the other side.

THE NOMINEES ARE:

  • IAN ANDERSON
  • DAVIS BOWIE
  • ERIC CLAPTON
  • ELVIS COSTELLO
  • RAY DAVIES
  • GRAHAM GOULDMAN
  • GEORGE HARRISON
  • JOE JACKSON
  • MARK KNOPFLER
  • DONOVAN LEITCH
  • JOHN LENNON
  • NICK LOWE
  • PAUL McCARTNEY
  • VAN MORRISON
  • CAT STEVENS
  • STING
  • RICHARD THOMPSON

VOTING FOR THE BEST BRITISH SOLO SONGWRITERS

Oops!  My bad, I was confusing the dates of how long people had been associated with this site with dates of comments.  It has been a frustrating couple of weeks with my cable coming and going just as the wind changes direction.  It appears I have changed my inner clock without cable.  Where once I would be up all night, I have found without any distraction I have been getting to sleep earlier and earlier and it is time to for me to say goodnight, and sorry for confusing the dates! ;o)

VOTING FOR THE BEST BRITISH SOLO SONGWRITERS

It appears this blog has been ongoing for some time even though there was given a timeline of a week.  Given the dates of some of the comments, the timeline has been expired for a few years!  However, I found it rather interesting and thought I would add my thoughts on the question posed: "THE BEST BRITISH SOLO SONGWRITERS."

As music is a personal taste, what one might believe may not be the same as an other's.  It is pretty much the same as asking which type of food do you prefer?  I enjoy many different culinary dishes, whether from the same country, region, or the world (at least the ones I have partaken of.)

In order to narrow the choices, you might ask which country/region is my favorite?  One again my dilemma would be the same.  Take for instance Italy, the foods of the different regions change significantly from north to south and east to west of bordering countries.  The food from northern Italy is vastly different from that of the south, east, or west.  If I am to come to a decision of a specific dish, I must narrow my choices to a specific part of the country.  Ah, yet again I find myself trying to decide which region I prefer and rather difficult to do even if I were to narrow my choices to one country.  It is akin to asking, which of your children do you love the most?

Can the majority of people answer that question?  While there are qualities in each that we admire, we love them all, and such is the same when asking about music or any of the arts.  I may have one artist that in general I prefer when given a specific time period but I may also find it the same difficulty in choosing only one or rating them as my taste in music is eclectic as my taste in many things.

In all the artists mentioned, I have something(s) about all of them that I could say was, in my opinion, the best, but which do I like the best?  I once again find myself at the beginning.  In order to end an endless question, at least to me, I love something about all of them for their individuality.  Perhaps if one were to ask about a specific artist during a specific time period, as their music has changed over the years, I might be able to answer your question without taking your on a long and winding road!  No pun intended!

VOTING FOR THE BEST BRITISH SOLO SONGWRITERS

  FINAL RESULTS OF VOTING

An excellent job by all of you who participated. Not a great deal of surprises to me, but obviously a lot of thought reflecting the passion that people have for their favorite artist. As before, I have tallied votes both on a ten point weighted system and also on overall votes cast for each artist. And as before, the number of votes received do not always agree with the esteem certain artists get when placement is weighted. Write in artists are represented by lower case spelling of their names. When point totals were tied, placement was determined by artist receiving the most votes. AND SO, THE TOTALS.

Thanks for the vote CLEAN.   I strongly considered writing a piece on the Bee Gees, mostly Barry Gibb who was the most prolific songwriter of the three although all three did write songs. I just kind of ran out of steam so I'm glad someone gave them a little love.

VOTING FOR THE BEST BRITISH SOLO SONGWRITERS

PROFESSOR ,  I agree with you that Jagger/Richards are songwriters non-parallell, but they are a true songwriting team, not individual songwriters who share writing credits per contractual agreement as Lennon and McCartney did. The Rolling Stones are my all time favorite group and The Glimmer Twins will be my choice for best collabarative songwriters, but this particular forum is for complete songwriters who provide both lyrics and melodies by themselves. You may substitute another person in the 2/2a slot if you like or I will move positions 3-10 up one notch each. Thanks for coming by and voting. Always glad to see some new faces on my blogs. And I hope to see you around the BAR & GRILL when my home life settles down a little.
