The "Greatest" Guitarist In History?

-Back toward the end of April, SPORTFAN 01 started a thread entitled "Greatest Guitarist of all times".  I am not sure what I might be getting myself into here, but I thought it would be very interesting to take that idea and format it into a run-off in the same way that DDriver80, YankeeLuvinGator, and The Bong Show had previously done with the "greatest" albums, bands, and frontmen, respectively.  I will also add that while space restrictions limited the title, please feel free to post any and all guitarists that you enjoy, whether they be considered "rock & roll", jazz, jazz/fusion, blues, folk, country, classical, or whatever-  any and all idioms are welcomed-  I want this to be as inclusive a vote as possible.  The rules are very simple-  please name your top 10 favorite axe-men (or women) in no particular order.  The voting for the first round will conclude at 1am, Japan Standard Time, Tuesday, June 3rd  (12pm EDT, Monday, June 2nd).  I will then tally the top 16 vote getters, and seed them accordingly for the second round.  I will add that while some good-natured sparring is fine and indeed welcomed, any  malicious personal attacks will not be tolerated & will be promptly removed-  let's all have some fun with this!  I also wish to thank my bretheren (and sisteren) on RockFlorida's "What Are You Listening To?" thread, without who's support and inspiration, I would not have done this-  you guys know who you are...

The "Greatest" Guitarist In Rock & Roll History?

  1. Jimi Hendrix-Forever changed the way we play guitar.
  2. Stevie Ray Vaughan-Revitalized blues popularity with his intense powerful style.
  3. Steve Vai-Amazing accuracy and speed combined with unique unearthly sound that is unmatched to this day.
  4. Paul Gilbert/Yngwie Malmsteen-Classical music backgrounds gave way to dynamic ranges of sound and melodies. Their amazing technique and ability to use Classical styles of scales and appreggios and blend them into the modern rock format. There are so many more guitarist that are very worthy of a mention but as a musician myself, I my take up the whole evening with my favorites. The "Greatest" Guitarist In Rock & Roll History?

-I first want to thank you guys once more for your input and great insight here-  as a fellow guitarist & affectionaddo, it's been a heckuva lot of fun for me to read and respond to-  Thanks again!

-I don't think I'd be putting myself too far out on a limb by commenting that the guitar is almost certainly the most popular musical intrument in the world, and that it is central to most of the more popular forms of music in the world, as well.  Translation?  There are a ton of fantastic players out there-  most of whom no one has a clue about, owing largely to that latter opine of mine...   I'll remind also everyone that these are the results of a vote, and do not as such constitute a personal evaluation of anyone's talents on my part-  it's all up to you guys...

-So, while many folks favorites didn't make the first round (including about half of who I'd have personally picked!), take heart & bear that stuff in mind-  there is a ton of competition and popular music to contend with.  I have my own opinions, as well (as does everyone else), but let's all vote & see what happens with the succeeding rounds- it's bound to be interesting, and from what I have recorded so far, there may well be a few upsets in store...  Thanks again, everyone, for participating-  the cordial and intelligent manner in which this has been conducted has won you all a lot of personal respect....
