The "Greatest" Guitarist in History? Round 1...

-Well folks, I'll begin by thanking everyone for participating in the initial vote-  we had a great response with much insightful commentary tossed in for good measure!!  I had encouraged diversity, and that's certainly what we got here, with 167 different guitarists named.

-Now all the votes are counted and the brackets are set.  There were a number of instances in the lower seedings where as final arbitror, I had to toss in a tie-breaker.  In doing so, I didn't pick favorites, but instead tried to evaluate on diversity of styles, and percieved influence.  Tie-breakers are indicated with an asterisk (*).  Seedings are indicated  in parenthesis.

-It had been suggested that I also post a list of the top 100, but that has proved impossible, with slightly over half (84) of the guitarists named being one-time entries, and a large number of others being only named twice.  I will, however, post a "Top 25" in the coming days.

-So here they are, the top 32 "greatest guitarists" as voted by the CBS Sports Community, and the brackets-

Eric Clapton(1)  vs. Kirk Hammett(32)*

Jimi Hendrix(2) vs. Ry Cooder(31)*

Stevie Ray Vaughn(3) vs. Chet Atkins(30)*

Carlos Santana(4) vs. Rick Emmett(29)*

Edward Van Halen(5) vs. Nancy Wilson(28)*

Jimmy Page(6) vs. "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott(27)*

David Gilmour(7) vs. Alvin Lee(26)*

Duane Allman(8) vs. Derek Trucks(25)*

BB King(9) vs. Roy Buchannan(24)*

Jeff Beck(10) vs. Dicky Betts(23)*

Joe Satriani(11) vs. Pete Townshend(22)*

Randy Rhodes(12) vs. Alex Lifeson(21)*

Mark Knopfler(13) vs. Chuck Berry(20)*

Steve Vai(14) vs. Robert Johnson(19)

Johnny Winter(15) vs. Slash(18)

and

Yngwie Malmstein(16) vs. Buddy Guy(17)

-Just a reminder to all that not having voted initially does not make you inelligible to vote in any of the coming brackets- all are welcomed...

-Thanks again to all who have already participated!!  Cast your votes & lets all have some fun with the run-off!!

-The deadline for voting in Round 1 is midnight Thursday evening, EDT (June 12th).

The "Greatest" Guitarist in History? Round 1...

Guy who spent half his life high or stoned and stole his best friends wife,
-Agonizing over having fallen for his best friend's wife was a good part of the reason Clapton first got into heroin in the first place, KeyWest-  prior to that he dropped acid a few times and smoked pot, kinda like about half the people his age at the time.  Patty left George as much for the fact that he'd emotionally aban
doned her for his Hindu "spiritual high-ground" as much as anything else-  of course, Eric was there waiting for her...

The "Greatest" Guitarist in History? Round 1...

Its funny how when we were young, everything was so black and white. I HATE this...I LOVE this.
-Sooooo, so true, KeyWest, along with guys not being "cool" for liking certain players & bands, etc..  Thankfully it does tend to wear off over the years-  at least for some of us...

The "Greatest" Guitarist in History? Round 1...

-You guys have both piqued my interest about this fellow Bernie Torme-  I had never heard of him before your mention.  I'll have to see if I can find a sample or two of his playing somewhere...

Yeah - Bernie was put in a tough spot replacing Randy Rhoads on the fly during the 2nd leg of the Diary of a Madman Tour... He had just put together his own band and was entrenched in those songs, and now he gets this gig and had to learn something like 20 tunes within a week!  I vaguely recall, but I do remember him just wingin' his own leads during the tunes, intertwined with some of Randy's licks.  The show for what I remember was still pretty awesome and there's actually a bootleg or two of the few shows he did with Ozzy.

Here's some cool links:

The "Greatest" Guitarist in History? Round 1...

-I might (or might not) differ with your opinion, KeyW, but I love the way you stated yours...

You play to your strengths. I am no good remembering dates or what album a certain song might be on...Music is as much a visual tapestry as it is a soundtrack for your life. I like to describe the pictures that music presents.

P.S.  To whoever the dude was that claimed that Eric Clapton was overrated...They called Clapton God. I would say that is a bit overrated, wouldn't you?. I mean lets break this down

God.... or .....Guy who spent half his life high or stoned and stole his best friends wife, who happens to play a mean guitar. Overrated? You decide.

The "Greatest" Guitarist in History? Round 1...

Back in the early 80's the big debate with my friends and I was between EVH and Randy Rhodes and I would argue for Eddie. I disliked Rhodes (foolishly) for a long time because of this. I just figured my friends were idiots (of course, I was in middle school). Now I love his work, but still feel Eddie was better. Its funny how when we were young, everything was so black and white. I HATE this...I LOVE this. The story was told that Townsend once told Clapton there was a guy that was going to put them all out of business...The guy was Jimi Hendrix. While Jimi was one of the greatest guitarists ever, It didn't mean that you couldn't like other guitarists. When you get older, you realize that a lot of the things you put labels on weren't exactly as bad...or sometimes as good as you thought.

Excellent blog.  Here is the way I see it.  There are probably much more knowledgable posters who would disagree with my votes but the below is just personal opinion.

-Thanks very much for the props, Tundra-  much appreciated!  And hey, personal opinion is indeed what it all this finally boils down to, isn't it?    Round 2 will be up in less than 24 hours-  hope to see you then!
