2008 Olympic Men's Basketball

Final stats on the medal rounds and on each country's team performance and on individual player's performances are now available on under "Men's Senior National" team.  They are extensive and detailed so posting them here would not display them as easily readable.  They are available in PDF or HTML format.  Stats were not kept for Angola for some reason, but all other teams and players are available game by game and cumulative for the entire Olympic basketball tournament.  Women's stats are also available for the Women's Senior National Team.

One thing I found noteworthy is in the cumulative stats for the Olympics.  Although as a TEAM, the USA team leads in almost all statistical categories (except 3 point shooting and free throws), but as individuals no USA player led in statistical categories because we played AS A TEAM!!!  We had no stars, we won't Olympic gold as a group that shared the rock and shared the gold.  GO TEAM USA!  Our players ranked within the top 5 in each category, especially assists and rebounds, and we had different players list in the top 5 of various cumulative stats, which again means we played as a team.

This team was well constructed and well coached and played right when it counted (I'm glad they gave up on the 'All-Star Dunk Contest' performances early enough in the competition to play fundamental basketball when the games were not going to be blow outs.  We finished with an average margin of victory of about 27 points, but if you watched the games, you know the medal rounds were not blow outs so Team USA got it done right.

If you are a stat freak like I am, check out the link to usabasketball.  You can also check out articles and comments at and select the Olympic competition games.  FIBA moved from the Olympic games into its next regional competition almost immediately after the Olympics so the Diamond Ball pre-Olympic competition stats are available and the competition for teams that were not in the Olympics are also posted.

Congrats to Team USA--the players, coaches, scouts, and staff.  Job well done!

2008 Olympic Men's Basketball

Olympic quarter finals are underway.  Losers of these games are done and have no chance to medal.

Spain v  Croatia 2:30 a.m. EST start time, USA Network Channel
This game started at a chaotic pace for Croatia, who has lost one of its players to an ankle injury.  Spain has 1 turnover to Croatia's 7 at the end of the first quarter.  Fouls seem a bit inconsistent--a smack to the jaw gets a no call, a reach in gets a foul.  Spain started out strong, but Croatia is a good 'come from behind' team.  Spain is shooting better from the outside.  Spain is clogging the paint since there is no defensive 3 second call in international ball.  The play is extremely aggressive and physical.  Pau Gasol has been more than dominant at the rim (who knew, Laker fans?  Pau is anything but soft in this game, playing great D and going strong to the rim--looks like he can't be stopped! ).  Spain shooting close to 50% in the first half compared to Croatia at 38%.  Half time score: Spain 37, Croatia 26

Third quarter starts with bodies flying and hitting the floor.  Pau Gasol has averaged 1 block per game so far and already has 3 blocks in this game.  Croatia had the best 3 point shooting percentage coming into this game of all teams, but they can't hit in this game.  Spain came into this game as the 4th highest rate of turnovers and they are still turning the ball over; they averaged 12 TO a game and have 12 by the 3rd  quarter end.  Score Spain 51 Croatia 38.

Fouth qtr getting testy !  Double technicals.  Spain seems to have adopted Team USA's defensive concepts and have held Croatia to 3 of 16 from 3 point range--normally a strength for Croatia.  Jose Calderon just limped off the court; hope he isn't injured.  Marko Rozic of Croatia fouls out with 2:20 to go in the game.

Final score Spain 72 Croatia 59

Spain awaits winner of Lithuania/China in next game.  That game starts at 4:45 a.m.EST so I'm OUT!!!  Stats on all games later.

2008 Olympic Men's Basketball

Quarterfinals August 20

These are the "one-and-done" bracket formats like the NCAA March Madness Tournament.  No points or ranking carry over from pool play.  The format takes the #1 ranked team from one group and matches it with the #4 ranked team from the other group.

A1 v B4
A2 v B3
B1v A4
B2 v A3

Brackets will be set at the end of pool play on August 18.  If  teams within a group have tied records of wins and losses, the team selected will be the team with the greatest point differential in beating opponents (which is why most teams continue to score even after they have an insurmountable lead in any given game).
