Does anybody want Barry Zito?

While the Giants' main focus this winter is on finding some way to add offense -- no surprise since San Francisco was 29th in the majors in runs scored -- they've also told teams that they'd love to dump Barry Zito.

"They're trying to give him away," said an official of one team that had spoken to the Giants. "I think they would eat as much money as it would take to get rid of him."

You can be sure it would take a lot. Zito has $101.5 million and five years still to go on the $126 million, seven-year deal he signed with the Giants two winters ago. Two years into that deal, Zito has lost his fastball and has also lost 30 games, going 21-30 with a 4.83 ERA for the Giants.

The Giants have decided to build their team around young starters Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, and they've told teams both are untouchable in trade talks. Somehow, though, the Giants will need to find some hitters.

"They're starving for power at the corners," the official said. "They want a third baseman, a right fielder, a first baseman. They just need bats."

if you get seats in the outfield you could probably fill up a bucket of game used balls pretty quickly when Zito takes the mound.  Why don't they hook him up with Barry Bonds trainer?  They will have him throwing high 90's and even have him swinging for the fence when it's his turn to bat.

I'd take Barry Zito....  He's a good lefty.

However, the Giants would have to pay his entire salary, and maybe even a % of other salaries on my team as well, just as punshment for giving such a bad pitcher a huge contract-- hence throwing the Economics all out of whack.

Bud Selig ought to rule that the Giants be forced to keep Zito and pay him in full as a penalty for such a mistake...

Zito's needs to go to St. Louis

to go to a new team....If the Giants take on 2/3 of his salary he would be a good fit for a team like St. Louis....The Cardinals always seem to make bad pitchers look good..Look at Kyle Loshe, Braden Looper, and no-one really wanted chris carpenter. I bet Zito would be a much better pitcher there, probably 14-10 with an ERA around 4.

Hear me out. Matt Cain and Barry Zito for Chris Davis. The Giants pay 70 million of Zito's contract and trade him and Cain for Chris Davis. Giants need to make this happen. Jon Daniels will make this trade. Come on Sabean make the deal. I think Zito can't be any worse than the back 3 of the Rangers rotation last year.

Two years into that deal, Zito has lost his fastball and has also lost 30 games, going 21-30 with a 4.83 ERA for the Giants.

That would be a 35-16 record with the Rangers. Best offense in baseball. Something to think about.

I'm sure he could get traded for 15 Kg of meat like that soccer player from Romania.

Sorry, but Davis is not worth Cain.  There would have to be other players, and with us paying any of Zito's salary, it'd have to be a pretty darn good package.  And besides that, Cain is not going anywhere.  He and Lincecum are UNTOUCHABLE.  And lastly, I think Zito would get absolutely destroyed in the AL.  I don't think any AL team is gonna want him.

Chris Davis for Matt Cain and we have to take Zito and only pay 30% of the deal?  You are absolutely right that Jon Daniels would do that in a heartbeat.  Davis will be solid, but Matt Cain is worth it alone

C'mon guys, Zito is still a decent pitcher who desperately needs back to American League. I am sure that we the Yankees can spare a few mil  and a 40 year old outfielder as well as a few used baseballs and bats. Yanks could use the innings with possible loss of Moose and Andy.
