Just the other day, the manager of a major-league team asked a couple of writers to explain the format for the World Baseball Classic.
"So does the U.S. play another game (in Toronto)?" the manager asked.
"Yes, but they've already qualified for the next round," was the correct answer.
"But is Puerto Rico playing another game?"
"Yes."
"I give up."
A format that's far too difficult to understand. Just one more problem with a tournament that not enough people in this country care about.
But just when you think this tournament has no chance to catch on, the Netherlands knocks the Dominican Republic out of the tournament.
A huge, March Madness-style upset. That's something anyone can understand.
Maybe the WBC has a chance after all.
Now, if we can only figure out who the Dutch team plays next.
