Astros' Cooper: 'We should win 90'

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Astros have been one of the least impressive teams in Florida this spring. They haven't won (4-16-3, even after three straight wins), and they haven't looked good, either.

You wouldn't know it by talking to manager Cecil Cooper.

"We should win 90 games, without question," Cooper said this morning. "We have a terrific bullpen. We have one of the best closers in the game. We've got the ace in the National League. We've got three of the best offensive players at their position. We've got, if not the best, then one of the top catchers in baseball.

"I mean, c'mon. We've got what it takes. You're telling me we're not going to win that many games?"

The Astros do have a top closer in Jose Valverde. They have Roy Oswalt atop their rotation. They have Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee. Miguel Tejada can still hit, even if he's starting to look slow at shortstop. The Pudge Rodriguez signing can't hurt.

But 90 wins?

"He's not looking at the same pitching staff I am," said one scout who has followed the Astros this spring.

No one outside the Astros clubhouse is predicting 90 wins for this team. More people are predicting 90 losses.

"I've heard," Cooper said. "I don't care what they say. I've been with them everyday. I believe in what we have here. I do believe we'll win 90-plus."

Cooper's players agree with him.

"At least 90 games," first baseman Lance Berkman said. "We know what kind of team we have. I mean, why shouldn't we [win 90]? We won 86 last year, and we have a better team. This is the Houston Astros. We play better than we look on paper."

Best ace in the NL? LOL!

Ok, oswalt is very good, but he ins't better than Santana and Hamels and even Webb at this point in his career.

But they've also ranked the Mets in the the top 10 ahead of the Phillies!!!!

It looks to me like they ranked the Phillies #1 and the Mets #7, which is pretty accurate at least for these two teams.  Where are you getting your info? These are the only ones I could find.  The Mets will contend for the division, or the WC.  Are there other sets of power rankings, maybe peoples blogs?? I'll admit 29 is a bit harsh, but they deserve to be 20 or later.

The Mets should be in the top ten regardless of just missing the playoffs.  The Astros, well lets just say that they have a lot of rebuilding to do.  They are an 80 win team at best, thats not getting you the wildcard especially playing most of your games vs. the Cubs, Brewers, and Cardinals.  Maybe your "'in the hunt"  term to you means that when the wildcard standings get posted and they are 10 games out of the WC Sept 1 they are close.  You can't even win spring training games and the team doesn't look near ready for the season. You should really check with reality on your end. Its so easy for fans to throw the term choke out there when their team is realistically not going to be in contention in the beginning of August.   A choke is when you are ahead or even late in the game  and blow it. (mets 07) or  (Houston 05 blowing WS games 2,3,4 on the way to getting swept) its really subjective to the situation,  not the misapplied term that everyone likes to throw around so loosely these days.

Astros' Cooper: 'We should win 90'

Maybe, Cecil Cooper should be drug tested! There is NO WAY the Astros win 90 games with the pitching staff they have. What makes him think they can win 90 games when his team hasn't been able to even get to double digit wins in the preseason. What a joke!!! It's more likely that Cooper gets fired by the end of the year, then it is that the Astros win 90 games. If by some miracle, the Astros do win 90 or more games, then Cooper should be given the manager of the year award. He will have done one hell of a job coaching his butt off to get them there. The reality is more likely that the Astros win a max of 67 games this year.

Astros' Cooper: 'We should win 90'

CBS couldn't wait to jump all over this one.  Especially since they've ranked the Astros 29th in their meaningless power rankings. But they've also ranked the Mets in the the top 10 ahead of the Phillies!!!!  So that should tell you something about the "brain trust" at CBS.

Hey CBS.  HE'S THE MANAGER!!!!!  DUHHHHHHHH!!!!  What is he gonna say?  I'm sure this year will turn out just like every year since 2003.  CBS will anoint the Mets the NL champs and put the Astros in the cellar.  What will happen?  The Astros will somehow be in the WC hunt in Sept. and the Mets will choke and miss the playoffs.

Sorry all you Met fans that work at CBS.  Reallity's a Mutha F'er!!!!!!!!!!!

Astros' Cooper: 'We should win 90'

I agree. I don't see the Astros getting to 90. The Astros don't have enough young blood and most of their players are on the backside of their career. The Astros pitching staff looks terrible in my opinion with the exception of Roy Oswalt at the top of the rotation and with the way he pitched in the World Baseball Classic. If he pitches anything like he did there. The Astros are doomed. There is a huge organizational gap. Out of the top 177 prospects the Astros only have 2. They need to develop more homegrown talent. The Astros are truly getting like the Yankees in alot of ways. They go out spend alot of money on players like Carlos Lee and Miguel Tejada that no other team wanted for the price they were asking. As I said in a post a week or two ago. I would rather be the Pirates than the Astros right now, because the Pirates do have young players that should mature and become better players while the Astros have players that have already matured, but they are going on the downside of their careers. Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn are the only 2 young starting position players, and every member of the Astros pitching staff is 30 or older. The Astros if they don't address the age problem soon will be the worst team in the majors in a couple of years. You can't just keep signing the Darin Erstad 's and Ivan Rodriguez 's of the world. Signing quick fixes never really gets you anywhere. 90 just seems to farfetched to me. While the lineup they have now with Lee, Tejada, and Berkman looks good on paper a few years ago. Now you see those three players in the middle of a lineup and realize you have two solid players in Lee and Berkman, but you don't know what you are getting with Tejada with all of the legal things going on with him. While you do have two good aging hitters that can be productive in the middle of the order. You also have a pitching staff that looks to be on the rocks.

Astros' Cooper: 'We should win 90'

Cooper's just saying what he wants Drayton McLain to hear.  None the less, Cooper will be fired by the end of the season.   Drayton's cheap ass made ZERO attempt to land the Astros any starting pitchers with substance.  He's relying on either injury-prone or has-been pitchers to come in and win games for the Astros.  Being a resident of the Houston area, I'm only going to the games when Oswalt pitches.  Why should I spend money to watch Hampton or Backe blow a game for us?

Just don't have the bench

The Astro will be lucky to win 85 games, even with good starter. Who is going to back these guys up when they need a brake or are injured. If you look around the league and see teams bench players that would be starter on other teams. That is a team that runs deep and it don't hurt as bad to loss that starter for 30 days. I don't see on the Astros

Astros' Cooper: 'We should win 90'

Their NL Central schedule alone will beat this team up enough to keep them under 90.  They do have a legitimate team and will more than likely do their patented 25-5 record to close out the season, but I just can't see it getting to 90...just an opinion.
