Red Sox get Adam LaRoche from Pirates

The Red Sox, who have struggled offensively in the last week, have acquired struggling first baseman Adam LaRoche in a trade with the Pirates, CBSSports.com has confirmed.

The Pirates, who have been the most active team on this year's trade market, will get two minor-leaguers, pitcher Hunter Strickland and shortstop Argenis Diaz, in return for LaRoche. In addition, according to a source familiar with the talks, the Pirates will send Boston cash to pay part of LaRoche's $7.05 million contract.

LaRoche is hitting .247 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs. After hitting .271 through the end of June, LaRoche has slumped badly, with a .138 average and just one home run in 58 at-bats in July.

The Red Sox have been looking for an extra bat. Boston has scored just 12 runs in five games since the All-Star break, and Tuesday night the Sox fell out of first place in the American League East for the first time since June 8.

LaRoche doesn't figure to fit into Boston's everyday lineup, but in addition to giving the Red Sox another option off the bench, he gives them some insurance in case Mike Lowell has more trouble with his surgically repaired hip. The left-handed hitting LaRoche can play first base, with Kevin Youkilis moving to third.

As Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe points out , Boston's biggest problems offensively have come against right-handed pitching. David Ortiz hasn't hit nearly as well in July as he did in June, and J.D. Drew has been even more disappointing, with no hits in 18 at-bats since the All-Star break.

The 29-year-old LaRoche will be a free agent at the end of this year. He's the fifth player the Pirates have traded off their major-league roster this year, joining Nate McLouth (to the Braves), Eric Hinske (to the Yankees) and Sean Burnett and Nyjer Morgan (to the Nationals).

Neither the 20-year-old Strickland (5-4, 3.35 at Class A Greenville) nor the 22-year-old Diaz (.253 at Double-A Portland) was considered one of Boston's top prospects, not surprising considering that LaRoche isn't hitting and is close to free agency.

Red Sox get Adam LaRoche from Pirates

Wait and see what, The soxs didn't steal LaRoche from the Pirates, they gave him and his contract away.  I'm happy that the soxs got a struggling first baseman instead of what they really need, someone to push JD Drew in the outfield.  Lowell will play third just not everyday and youk will play first when he's not playing third and together they will do allright, so LaRoche will get some more pine time, it's just that it will be in Boston instead of Pittsburg.  In the mean time JD.Drew is suffering out there, lets just ignore him and hope Boston continues to address every other area except fo the one they really need help in lie (right field).  P.S. hey sox fans don't look now but the RAYS are coming don't duck or you'll miss the knockout, Damn I love it when Boston tries to hide its most glaring needs, carry one Soxs.

The point in all of this is why should the Red Sox give the Pirates more than they got? LaRoche is going to be a bench guy, they paid the cost based on what their using him for and because their only renting him. I seriously doubt the Sox sign him again unless he is willing to take a paycut  and accept a bench job for the Sox over starting somewhere else.

The Pirates could sign him next year and have rented him out for a couple months at the cost of gaining 2 prospects. How is that not a win-win situation? You think the Pirates are gonna make a run for the playoffs or something?

Red Sox get Adam LaRoche from Pirates

Do you remember what the Red Sox gave up last year in order to get Jason Bay?  Manny Ramirez plus two prospects, it wasn't like they gave up junk.  They gave up one of the best right handed hitters of all time plus two prospects.   Do you even know anything about baseball or just spout off about nonsense.
