Rizzo to be named Nationals GM -- really!

The Nationals are expected to name Mike Rizzo as general manager at a news conference Thursday.

Major league sources confirmed late Wednesday night that Rizzo, who has been the acting general manager since Jim Bowden was forced out of the job in spring training, has been given the full-time job. The decision comes as a surprise, because Diamondbacks executive Jerry DiPoto has told some friends that he expected to be offered the position -- and planned to accept it.

CBSSports.com reported earlier Wednesday that DiPoto was expected to get the job.

Rizzo, who joined the Nationals from Arizona is July 2006, has been widely praised in baseball for the way he has handled a difficult position. Most recently, Rizzo was the point man in the Nats' successful effort to sign top draft pick Stephen Strasburg.

Rizzo played in the minor leagues with the Angels, and he worked with the Red Sox, White Sox and Diamondbacks before coming to the Nationals.

No Mea Culpa from Danny Boy?

Look, I am excited that Rizzo gets the job.  Great move by the Nats.

The problem I have here is with Danny Knob.  You originally got it wrong.  I happens.  But, do you man up and admit your mistake?  No, you weasel out of it by saying CBSSports.com reported.  BS!  YOU REPORTED IT!  FESS UP!  Just goes to show what a 2-bit hack you are.  And they wonder why bloggers lack credibiltiy.

Rizzo to be named Nationals GM -- really!

Dannyboy has removed all evidence of his previous column touting DiPoto as the next Nats' GM.  Note that he says now that "CBSSports.com reported..." but does not allude to his column yesterday.  Nor can his previous column be found on his list of recent columns or on his archived columns list.   This sure does raise a red flag as to Dannyboy's credibility rating!

Swing and a miss

As I posted on another thread, Knobler had a swing and a miss yesterday - he said DiPoto had the Washington GM job.  Oh, well, Danny boy.

Throwing Rizzo a bone for the Strasbug signing...

If the Nationals don't sign Strasburg, there's no way Rizzo gets this job.

This promotion is a thank you to Rizzo for bringing the huge sense of relief we all feel that Strasburg did eventually sign.

However, I'm not sure that this is a good idea for the Nationals in the long run.  Time may prove me wrong, hopefully, but I was really hoping for a more established GM candidate who has been properly groomed for this position.

I do believe that there is a right way to do things and that doing things the right way ultimately leads to success, and this just does not feel like the right way to me.

That having been said, I have nothing against Rizzo and we all need a break in life to have an opportunity to showcase our talents.  Perhaps this is his big break.

I would be more than happy to eat my words if Rizzo turns out to be a solid GM.  At the very least, he will surely be an improvement over Bowden.

Rizzo to be named Nationals GM -- really!

This is a good move by the Nationals. What this team needs is stability and it seems like Rizzo and Riggleman as GM and Manager will yeild success. True, the Nationals still have the worst record in baseball, but they have been competitive in their games since the All Star break and have shown signs that they can turn things around next season.
