Dodgers hope to deal Pierre, Bucs interested?

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Dodgers need pitching help, but in part because of owner Frank McCourt's divorce, they have no money to spend.

The solution? Trade outfielder Juan Pierre, due to make $10 million next year and $8.5 million in 2011.

Among the teams that may have interest, according to sources, are the usually-thrifty Pirates. It's not yet clear how a deal would be constructed, but the Dodgers would likely try to get either Paul Maholm and Zach Duke.

In any possible Pierre trade, the Dodgers could either acquire a starting pitcher in return, or could free up enough money to acquire a pitcher elsewhere. Depending on who they get in return, it's likely the Dodgers would need to agree to pay part of Pierre's contract to make a deal happen.

Pierre was one of many names floating through the lobby of the Marriott hotel as executives gathered for the winter meetings, which officially begin Monday. The Cubs continue in their attempts to trade outfielder Milton Bradley, and the Marlins have been talking to various teams about both reliever Matt Lindstrom and second baseman Dan Uggla.

There can be absolutely ZERO truth to this rumor.  If the Pirates wanted a guy like Juan Pierre for thier outfield, they would have kept Nyjer Morgan.  They don't want Pierre and sure as heck wouldn't give up Duke or Maholm for him if they did.

yeah, suppan would be of no help for the dodgers in 2010, and would actually hurt them, because you know the guy is gonna have a losing record. but as a rockies fan, i hope they land him instead duke or maholm!!!!! if the pirates trade either duke or maholm for pierre in some sort of deal, then A) I'm going to be really pissed that LA just got a quailty middle of the rotation LEFT HANDED starter too (rockies not as good against lefties), and B) feel bad for pirates fans who have to watch one of the few quality players they have walk away for a 32 year old slap hitting outfielder.  don't get me wrong, i like juan pierre, but not for a young and solid starting pitcher.  i have no idea why pittsburgh wants to trade duke and maholm though.  they are by far their best pitchers, are still in their mid 20s (i think), and are both lefties.  thank jesus i'm not a pirates fan.

Jeff Suppan isn't exactly "pitching help." Pitching hurt, maybe? The guy has pitched below replacement level for the last two seasons, and he's being paid like a #2 pitcher. The Dodgers can and should do better.

In reality, the Brewers are gaining a couple million if they were to do this trade.  Suppan is scheduled to make 12.5 million in his final year of his 4 year deal the the Crew.  Plus any trade the Dodgers do with Pierre they are going to have to eat part of his salary.

Attention White Sox!

Juan Pierre is the our leadoff answer.  So get on that!

While it does seem ignorant for Pittsburgh to do this, lets first realize that Pierre played better than anyone on the Pirates last year and those pitchers referred to haven't been accounting for too many wins in the last few seasons.  I say do the deal.

Seriously, this is like a little kid making up his fantasy trade.
Hey, let me trade my aging OF with diminished skills who makes $18 million over the next two years for a contributing starting pitcher.
Yeah, right.
A deal that makes sense for Pierre is trading him to the Brewers for Jeff Suppan. The Dodgers get a bad contract back that expires next year. The Brewers get a veteran to help in their OF and mentor their new CF Gomez and they take on about $4 million to do so.

C'mon!  How about a little commentary here?  This deal would make absolutely no sense for the Pirates as an organization any way you slice it.
When I click to read a column like this I'd expect the author to add a little blurb reminding us how questionable some sources can be since this deal would not help the Pirates at all.  They have young talent that needs to play and learn instead of sitting behind a Quadruple-A hitter like Pierre.  Pierre should be bound for a playoff team in search of a 4th outfielder who can spell their regulars without compromising the entire lineup.  Until his run last year as the fill-in for Manny Ramirez, many thought Pierre was done as a starter in the Majors.  Why would the Pirates want to take on a contract of $18.5 million for the next two years and give up one of their few starting pitchers that can cut it in the Majors?  Makes no damn sense.

Exactly what the Buccos need, a 32 year old slap hitting outfielder that makes 8 - 10 million.  Oh, and let's throw in a left handed starting pitcher.

Not exactly a great deal by any stretch of the imagination.  I would rather give a chance to Milledge or bring Tabata up and give him a chance and get to keep a young, inexpensive left handed starter.

Will give 100 to 1 odds this doesn't happen.
