INDIANAPOLIS -- Because the Yankees, Tigers and Diamondbacks have yet to announce their three-team deal, Arizona officials haven't yet been able to explain why they were willing to deal away Max Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth to get Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy.
It's a question that even many baseball executives were asking Tuesday.
Here, according to a source familiar with the Diamondbacks, is the answer: The Diamondbacks came to the winter meetings looking for rotation depth, and they think that Jackson and Kennedy (who pitched well in the Arizona Fall League) will begin the 2010 season in the rotation. They see the two as potential third and fourth starters, behind Brandon Webb and Dan Haren, in what could be a very strong rotation.
While Scherzer started 30 games for Arizona in 2009, he was only 9-11 with a 4.12 ERA. Schlereth, meanwhile, is a reliever with a good arm but questionable control.
One rival executive said he doesn't question Arizona's motives, because "they know the medicals on their guys better than anyone."
