Could Yankees trade for Lowe?

Posted on: December 14, 2009 5:52 pm
Now that John Lackey is headed to the Red Sox, and now that Roy Halladay is headed to the Phillies, and now that Cliff Lee is headed to the Mariners, where does Derek Lowe go?

How about the Yankees?

The Yankees want a fourth starter to go with CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte, and they have hitters who could interest the Braves. The two teams have talked, and while it's not certain that a Lowe deal has been discussed, it would make sense.

Lowe also makes sense for the Angels, who have lost out on both Halladay and Lackey, their two top targets. Outfielder Juan Rivera would be "a nice start" to a package for Lowe, according to someone familiar with the two teams.

The Mariners have also shown interest in Lowe, but now that they are set to get Lee, they would seem to have less motivation to make a trade.

The Braves began the offseason exploring deals for either Lowe or Javier Vazquez, but sources said that they are now much more focused on dealing Lowe than Vazquez. Vazquez, in any case, would be a tough deal to make for the Angels, because of the pitcher's strong preference to stay on the East Coast.

The Braves are willing to pay some of Lowe's salary ($45 million over the next three years), depending on the players they get in the trade.

Could Yankees trade for Lowe?

Lets run down the Yanks 09 World Series roster...Posada-homegrownTex-FA signingCano-homegrownJeter-homegrow

Im missing a couple of guys who I cant think of off the top of my head...but look at that, out of the players I listed the Yankees have 12 homegrown players, 5 players aquired via trade, and 5 free agent signings. Looks to me like over half the roster was built internally. So before people go saying that the Yankees buy World Series, keep in mind this was their first since 2000. Also, just because we have the highest payroll doesnt mean we buy championships. Guys like Jeter, Posada, Mariano, Pettitte, etc all happen to be highly paid athletes, but they werent when the first started. You better believe Cano will get a big fat paycheck when his FA time comes too. SO SUCK ON THIS ----->  8O

Could Yankees trade for Lowe?

I agree that the Braves don't need a ton for Lowe. They don't need anything if someone is going to take on his whole contract. But, if the Braves eat some of Lowe's contract then they do need to get something quality in return.  I don't think they want to get Swisher and eat part of the contract, thats only a good deal for the yanks.  Randy Wolf got 10 mil/yr on the open market, Lackey got 17 mil/yr in the bullpen. If the Braves eat a few mil a year then Lowe is a valuable commodity in my mind now. There are no durable, quality free agents left...only oft injured guys that you could get for one year. The way the Yanks score runs, Lowe is an above average pitcher as a #4 starter. He is not a #1 and yes, the Braves overpaid...but that was the market. Oliver Perez got 12 mil/yr from the Mets and he ended up in the pen. Trust me, there are worse guys out there than Lowe.

Could Yankees trade for Lowe?

Thats pretty funny  Lowe is 37 years old, pitching to an ERA pushing 5.00  in the national league........his WHIP is over 1.5, doesnt strike anyone out and makes 45 million over the next 3 years, and you would want more than Swisher?
I wouldnt give you a half eaten carton of ice cream for Lowe and his 45 million dollar contract.

Could Yankees trade for Lowe?

I would think that the Yankees pass on this "could be" trade. I for one, hope they do. I say no to Lowe.

Could Yankees trade for Lowe?

Honestly wish that Jones would just retire. He is always injured, probably a reraction of steroid use a few years agoWow, you are not a real Braves fan....he's still a great hitter and doesn't fit the profile at all of someone who used steroids.
Also we only need one outfielder and Jason Heyward should produce for us by years end, but I wouldn't expect someone who's making such stupid post to know that.

Could Yankees trade for Lowe?

1. I'm not at all concerned with the Red Sox getting Lackey. We're still the better team.

2. Still, you can never have enough pitching, so it would be great to get Lowe.

Could Yankees trade for Lowe?

The braves don't really need 2 outfielders.  They signed Diaz a couple of days ago.  He will be more than servicable.  They also have Heyward who is expected to compete for a spot on the opening day roster.  We need a short term 1st baseman and 1 outfielder.  Chipper will rebound and be very productive with some protection in the lineup.  We do need a solid back up 3rd baseman for when Chipper is hurt and / or retires in a couple years.  Our outfield needs are specific to a right handed power bat.  That is what we are missing.

Could Yankees trade for Lowe?

Hope the Braves could get 2 hitters for Lowe, would be a nice Christmas present for the Braves/ I do not think that the Yankees have an offensive player of the caliber of Rivera that they would trade though. Rivera and Hendricks would be a nice package. Perhaps the change would make Hendricks be the bonafide leadoff hitter lots of scouts have predicted that he would be. Trading Lowe seems a lot better to me than trading Vasquez anyway. The Braves need a 1st baseman, 2 outfielders and a 3rd baseman able to play half the time for Jones. Honestly wish that Jones would just retire. He is always injured, probably a reraction of steroid use a few years ago.
