The Phillies have signed Joe Blanton to a three-year, $24 million contract, locking up another piece in their starting rotation. Blanton, who went 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA for the Phillies in 2009, would have been eligible for free agency after this year.

Blanton slots behind Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels. The Phillies signed Halladay to a long-term contract (through 2013) when they acquired him from the Blue Jays last month. Hamels is signed through 2011, and is under the Phillies control for another year after that. J.A. Happ, outstanding as a rookie in 2009, is under control through 2014.

Blanton, who made $5.475 million last year, had filed for $10.25 million in salary arbitration, with the Phillies offering $7.5 million.

i agree with you 100%.  I wish everyone would get over Lee, yes hes great but you HAD to deal him for prospects just incase you need some at deadline time to get a Joe Blanton like guy to help you down the stretch.

Because there's no way the Phillies get to keep both Halladay and Lee. In order for them to get Halladay they needed to give up a lot, and that includes giving up Lee.

I don't understand this you'll sign Blanton for 8 million a year but won't keep Lee for 9. I'm a Philly's fan but i just think this makes no sense. They say that they didn't want to deplete there farm system and i understand that. If you have any faith in your people who are scouting and drafting you can replenish it soon. With Halladay,Lee,Hamels and J.A. Happ you have the makings of a great staff for a couple of years. Whose to say Lee will want to leave this team with that rotation. He sounded like he liked his time here and i know the fans liked him. The Phillies can't say it's money cause they sold out the place almost every game.

I think this is a good move.  Blanton is a good #3 and eats up innnings. He helped win 2 pennants and a world series.  Now the Phillies need to concentrate on another starter at the back end of the rotation and reinforce the bullpen going forward.
