Some teams looking for pitching had hoped to trade for Brett Myers this week.

The Astros would apparently prefer to keep him through next year. According to sources, Houston has been working on a contract extension with Myers, possibly firming up what is now a mutual option for 2011.

Myers is making $5.1 million this year. The mutal option for 2011 is for $8 million.

Myers, who signed with the Astros last winter, is 8-6 with a 3.10 ERA in 21 starts.

"Myers is the best guy out there," said one scout whose team has been desperate to add pitching. "He has pitched better than all of them, including [Roy] Oswalt."

Astros work on Myers extension

Hopefully for Houston Astros fans, the team will only firm up the mutual option and not extend a deal past 2011. Brett Myers tends to work harder, have fewer little ailments and behave better off the field when his contract is coming up.  You could say that about a lot of players but in Myers' case I think it's a little more drastic.  It's also good to see him apparently getting along well in the clubhouse and, unless I've missed something in the news, keeping his nose clean after work.

It's got to be helpful that he's back to his full-time starting gig. Some people who criticized him in Philly forgot that he took a big one for the team during the 2007 season when he was needed in the bullpen.  Not only did he do as asked, he had a darn good year with only 2 or 3 blown saves.  So he really does seem like a good teammate most of the time...but a knucklehead sometimes outside the park.

ERA is not the be-all/end-all stat for any pitcher.  Oswalt's WHIP and K/BB ratio are significantly better, and those stats are more indicative of what the pitcher has done than ERA.

Roy's era is 3.55, Myers is 3.10....Myers is having the better year.

Oswalt had better numbers, so Myers wasn't really pitching "better".  Myers just got (slightly) more run support.

Astros work on Myers extension

Brett Myers has been fantastic this season. One of the few good moves that the Houston Astros have made in recent years was taking a chance on Myers who was returning a shoulder? injury.

Either way if the Astros resign Myers, and Wandy Rodriguez has a bounce back year in 2011 the Stro's may have a chance at winning a few more games.....or at least having a couple of good trade chips at the non-waiver trade deadline or the winter meetings.

With all that being said he's still owned in  81% of CBS leagues and a laughable 47.8% at ESPN and just 43% owned at Yahoo! Don't ask me how, but that's how it works apparently.
