It can be done -- Giants win the World Series

ARLINGTON, Texas -- As it turns out, a team from San Francisco is allowed to win the World Series.

And as it turns out, you can win a World Series with a team built almost entirely on pitching.

It can be done. The Giants just proved it.

And if you're asking how in the world they became champions with that lineup, you're asking the wrong question. They became champions because of that rotation.

They shut down the Rangers one more time Monday night in Game 5, with Tim Lincecum outdueling Cliff Lee in a 3-1 game. The Giants, as usual, won with just enough offense, with a three-run Edgar Renteria home run in the seventh inning breaking up a scoreless game.

They won the World Series, four games to one, and in two of those wins, the Rangers never scored. In the five games combined, the Rangers had just 12 runs, after scoring 59 in 11 games to eliminate the Rays and the Yankees.

Lincecum wasn't able to match rotation mates Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner by throwing the Giants' third shutout of the World Series, but he allowed just Nelson Cruz's solo home run in the seventh.

In their 15 postseason games, against the Braves, Phillies and Rangers, the Giants allowed just 41 runs, not even three a game on average. The starting rotation pitched a total of 97 2/3 innings in the postseason, allowing just 24 earned runs for a 2.21 ERA.

The bullpen was almost as good. Closer Brian Wilson didn't allow an earned run the entire postseason.

Because of the pitching, the Giants were able to win five postseason games where they scored three runs or fewer. They were able to win with a lineup that didn't come close to matching up in firepower with the one the Rangers put on the field each day.

In the clinching game, the Giants won with Cody Ross batting cleanup and Juan Uribe hitting fifth. Ross was a late-season waiver acquisition, and when the playoffs began he and Uribe hit near the bottom of the Giants order.

Doesn't matter. They won, as Giants teams hadn't been able to win in three previous World Series trips since the franchise moved to San Francisco in 1958.

Giants fans remember Bobby Richardson's catch in 1962, and the earthquake that allowed the A's to use just two starting pitchers in 1989, and Game 6 against the Angels in 2002.

But now they'll also remember Lincecum and Cain, Bumgarner and Wilson, Renteria and Ross and Buster Posey.

They'll never forget the 2010 Giants, the team that proved it could be done.

Well how big of you, but sorry to say The Giants pounded the Phillies, the Braves and the Rangers. Dominating is pounding and yes your Phillies were DOMINATED.  So thanks for your backhanded compliment, but we all saw the truth.

WhosUrDaddy84, thanks for the somewhat compliment. You tip your cap? How bout your team bow down to a staff that's greater than all. Was Philly's offense high powered? I don't know, don't recall them doing much at all!!! You're right, Pitching wins games, and for all I heard about H2garbage, or whatever you refered to them as, THERE IS NO BETTER STAFF THAN THE GIANTS'. Honestly I wouldn't be trying to bash the Phils if their fans didn't have a ridiculous sense of entitlement. So I'll go ahead and remind everyone what they already know, no team better in the Major's than San Fran. wanna try to argue that? look who holds the trophy!

The Yankees can learn a lot from the Giants. Too bad all they know is throw blank checks at people.

"The Giants didn't pound anyone this postseason.  They dominated everyone pitching-wise and didn't have a ton of scoring except Game 1 of the World Series."

Uh, did you not see the 9 to 0 drubbing game two?  The Giants won soundly, pitching and clutch hitting.

It can be done -- Giants win the World Series

8 games back in the loss column on August 25. Giants needed the Padres to lose 10 straight and won on the last day of the season.  Adding Lopez and Ramirez to the pen gave the pen some relief and Wilson soon became more unhittable with less free passes. Cody Ross on 8/22.  Freddie's stroke came back after his layoff.  Great chemistry from a bunch of gamers. Only downer is Panda's decrease in production and Burrell was mystified in the Series.

dutchboy,
The Giants didn't pound anyone this postseason.  They dominated everyone pitching-wise and didn't have a ton of scoring except Game 1 of the World Series.  But, you can't win if you can't score, and the Giants were able to shut down two high-powered offenses in a row successfully.  Pitching wins ballgames in the playoffs and the Giants have a ton of it.  Their bullpen was lights-out, and no matter how good an offense is, when teams are pitching that good, it won't matter.  The Giants earned the championship this year.  As a Phillies fan, I tip my cap to the Giants on winning it all and good job keeping the title in the NL.

It can be done -- Giants win the World Series

It gives all the other teams in MLB not named Yankees and Red Sox hope.  That a World Series can be won with pitching.  Not to take away from the Giants hitters, because some of them came through with clutch hits, but that lineup doesnt scare anyone, but the reason they won it all was their stellar pitching.  As a life long Toronto Blue Jays fan I can only see this as hope, our GM is buiilding our team with quality starting pitching, and our lineup is already better then the Giants, so there is a shot.  Congratulations to the Giants, and the Rangers for getting as far as they did,  it was nice to see a different look to the series this year.

LOL, I see you're still trying to backtrack from all the disrespect you gave SF throughout the postseason, and now you're STILL disrespecting them with comments like "SF is allowed to win a WS". You're such a tool it's not even funny. The awesome thing though is I get to enjoy SF's championship while you're sitting at home crying that your big market teams got beat by a home-grown team.

what a douchebag comment "San Francisco is allowed to win a World Series" Give me a break KNOBler, they pounded the Rangers, Phillies and Braves and you were wrong about every series. The Giants were by far the best team, better hitting, pitching, defense, and coaching the whole way through, just admit you really dont know baseball very well and also are unable to say you were wrong.
