More Hamilton questions: What was he thinking?

Two more questions about Josh Hamilton:

What was he thinking? And what was he thinking?

How could he take a chance diving into the plate head-first? And how could he blame it all on Dave Anderson?

One bad decision . . . and then another.

Anderson is the Rangers' third-base coach, the guy who noticed that Tigers pitcher Brad Penny wasn't covering home plate on Adrian Beltre's foul pop-up, and told Hamilton to try to score. I'm not sure it was a great chance to take in the first inning, given Hamilton's tendency to get hurt, but the Rangers like to be aggressive at all times (and general manager Jon Daniels defended Anderson on a conference call with reporters).

But whether or not Anderson made the right decision, Hamilton made the wrong decision -- twice.

It's far too big a risk to dive into home plate. Hamilton's explanation, as reported by Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram was that "If you slide feet-first, there's no point in even trying to run."

Sorry, not good enough.

And Hamilton made it worse by blaming Anderson, calling it "a stupid play" and saying that he didn't want to run.

Certainly he was frustrated, but you can't say that. Players know you can't say that.

"Is it true he called out the third-base coach?" one shocked player asked CBSSports.com colleague Scott Miller.

Yes, he did.

What was he thinking?

josh hamilton is a great story, but no one is ever going to confuse him with a great decision maker.    give him a break, its a miracle hes playing at all.  his brain chemistry is changed forever, hes going to do and say alot of stupid things, hopefully he stays away from real trouble as his life progressess.  pray for that guy, not just on the field but after the career is over.
