Bud Selig was right!

Just as the commissioner has said over and over, the Mets and Dodgers are not at all alike. Just check out this week's New Yorker for proof.

Of all the dumb things Dodgers lame-duck owner Frank McCourt has said and done, he didn't invite a reporter into his suite to listen to him make fun of his players. No, that was the latest dumb thing that (possibly lame-duck) Mets owner Fred Wilpon did.

The rips of Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran are buried in Jeffrey Toobin's very sympathetic, 10,000-word look at Wilpon's relationship with Bernard Madoff (Toobin gave Madoff another chance to proclaim Wilpon's innocence), but it's the rips that had Mets fans talking Monday morning.

Reyes "thinks he's going to get Carl Crawford money" and "won't get it," Wilpon told Toobin while they watched an early-season Mets loss together.

Wright is "A really good kid. A very good player. Not a superstar," Wilpon said.

Beltran is "65 to 70 percent of what he was," and got his seven-year, $119 million contract with the Mets solely because of "one [playoff] series."

Some Mets fans will no doubt concur with the owner's judgments. Some Mets fans will no doubt be thrilled to hear that the owner can be as emotional about the team as they are.

But do you really want to tell your best players that the owner thinks they're not that good? Do you really want to tell other teams that the players you're going to try to trade this summer aren't worth the money?

This is so typical Mets.

No, Selig is right. Fred Wilpon is no Frank McCourt.

The stress level of everything other than baseball is obviously creeping upward on Wilpon.  Although he is the owner and has every right to comment on his team, his players and staff, I think that he ought to have remained silent.  These kinds of remarks remind me of what an opposing owner might say.  The comments ooze a scent which only tends to devalue the franchise - the very one he is trying to sell.  Maybe when a potential buyer (or buyers) throws an offer on the table, it will be attached to a transcript of Toobin's interview.

As for Reyes, Wright and Beltran, Reyes may very well not get "Carl Crawford Money," but it won't be because of a lack of athleticism or talent (because Reyes has enormous, sky-high limits in both) - it will be because of his propensity for injury.  However, so far, so good this year and look what he has accomplished.  Wright is a quiet, very likable fellow who hits 30 HRs and drives in 100+ RBI on average from season to season.  Oh, and he normally steals 20 bases on top of that.  If he can't be called a superstar, it's only because his 125 KOs per year prevent it.  I would agree that Beltran's speed might only be 65 to 70 percent of what it was, but his bat seems to be 100 percent of what it has always been.  Beltran recognized that he lost a step or two and relinquished (on his own) center field to Pagan in an effort to reduce the wear and tear on his knees, which was a classy move.

The comments do nothing for team unity, which I think the Mets desparately need right now.

Are you telling me in 25 years where there were whispers about Madoff, and you don't investigate? No because they funded your whole empire based on this guy buy buying real estate with false earnings.

Not up to speed on the particualrs of the Madoff case I see. Additionally, Madoff did not fund the Wilpons, they had their money long before Madoff.
