Braves to McCann: Go ahead, block the plate

NEW YORK -- Like the Giants, the Braves have a catcher who bats cleanup. Like the Giants, the Braves have had trouble scoring runs and need that catcher in the lineup regularly.

But even with what happened to Buster Posey, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he would want Brian McCann to block the plate to cut off a run.

"You can't worry," Gonzalez said Friday. "People have gotten hurt coming down the steps. I don't think you can tell an athlete, a competitor, 'Don't block the plate.'

"I want him to give us an opportunity to win the game, and if that's by blocking the plate, it's by blocking the plate. I couldn't bring myself to say that to Brian -- don't block the plate."

Gonzalez, the former Marlins manager, also defended Marlins outfielder Scott Cousins, saying he thought Cousins did nothing wrong in the play on which Posey was hurt.

"I've looked over the film," Gonzalez said. "I thought it was a clean play."

Braves to McCann: Go ahead, block the plate

You are not supposed to block the plate until you have the ball in hand, however, it happens all the time where the catcher gets in position and waits for the ball.  I can see both sides of the story, but for those who keep saying, "you don't block second base" well you don't get any score for reaching second base either....

It was a freak play caused when Posey got in position too early and reached for the ball, putting himself in a really awkward postion.  He may never find himself in the same situation ever again even if he plays another ten years.

Exactly. Chris Coghlan got injured throwing shaving cream in someone's face and missed the rest of 2010 after. How many times have Ivan Rodriguez been brutally run over? Jorge Posada? Mike Piazza? It is part of the game. If they are that upset then just drill Cousins the next time you face him.

So you would rather teams not play to win ChopShop? I love how nonathletes try to change sports into a softer, gentler, non-athletic version.

I agree, most stupid comment I have ever heard. Look, Bobby Cox is one of the greatest managers ever. If you look back on most of the World Series the Braves didn't win, they weren't exactly blown out were they? One play here, one swing of the bat there - look, the true measure of greatness isn't the number of championships won....that is a creation of the present generation, a generation that craves instant gratification and "winning the championship" at all costs - even to the point many cheat. It's also all about money now. Much of this juvenile nonsense is also fueled by what I refer to as the ESPN generation.....I won't go into detail on that except to say it involves a lot of self aggradizing behavior - or however that word is spelled. Best thing the young sports minded crowd can do is to grow up - one only has to read the average sports comment board to quickly figure that out.

Bobby Cox is a Hall of Famer - the idiot who posted that comment about Cox will probably never amount to much.

Braves to McCann: Go ahead, block the plate

Guys....  what is the rule on blocking the plate?  I mean in a bang/bang play I get it.  But what if the ball is still at the cut off, is the catcher aloud to still block the plate and force the runner to go through or around?  Or is there no guidlines to what is allowed?

Posey accepted his role on the team KNOWING the risks, its the catchers job to protect the plate.. Its baseball if you dont want contact play 1st base. Its part of the game.

"Coming from the Braves, this doesn't hold much water. The team with ,what,18 straight playoff appearances and one measly World Series??" " Saint" Bobby Cox and his squad should've had 4 or 5 World series in that span. Notice my jays didn't win until  Coxy left?"

Seriously, worst comment ever!!!  Canadiens shouldnt be allowed on here.

learn some basball.  kinda tough when its a bang bang play,  ball got there at the same time.  if you think you can catch a ball and THEN look for the runner to tag him,  you my friend are an idiot.
