Yankees get scare as Teixeira hit on knee

NEW YORK -- The Yankees feared that they had lost Mark Teixeira for weeks, if not months.

By late Tuesday night, Teixeira was talking about trying to play Wednesday against the Red Sox.

His right knee, hit in the first inning Tuesday by a 90 mph Jon Lester cutter, wasn't broken, as he and others had initially feared. His knee wasn't even wrapped as he stood in the middle of the Yankee clubhouse after a 6-4 loss to the Red Sox that could have been so much worse.

"There's certain guys you can't go without," Alex Rodriguez said. "There's some guys that are irreplaceable."

He was talking about Teixeira, second in the majors with 18 homers (including six in the last 10 games before Tuesday).

The Yankees had reason to fear. The pitch hit Teixeira squarely on his back knee. Worse yet, Teixeira went directly to the ground, screaming out in pain.

"My concern was that he had fractured his kneecap," manager Joe Girardi admitted. Teix has been hit a lot, and I've never seen him show that much pain before. He was in a lot of pain, and that was scary."

Teixeira said he feared the same thing, but that he was lucky that the ball hit between the kneecap and the side of the knee.

"It actually hit me in a lucky place," he said.

And yes, he was talking about playing Wednesday.

"If I'm all right to go, I'm going to go," he said.

Just another crazy night with the Yankees and Red Sox, a night that also included Sox reliever Bobby Jenks leaving with a stiff back, and with Girardi admitting that he wasn't happy that David Ortiz flipped his bat after a fifth-inning home run.

"I didn't really care for it," Girardi said.

Yankees get scare as Teixeira hit on knee

I remember when the Red Sox took the first 8, then lost 9 of 10 and then missed the playoffs, kind of early to be getting giddy don't you think?

Yankees get scare as Teixeira hit on knee

GoPokes...great post and I agree 100 %.  Fan is short for fanatic.  Remember when Jeter got killed for partying with Justin Timberlake and some females days after losing the world series?  We sometimes tend to think these guys go in their houses and pout during the offseason and just meditate until the next season comes along.  The analogy I will use is when you were in school and you saw your teacher at teh grocery or Wal Mart...You thought..."what are they doing here?  They eat and go out and don't go into the closet in their classroom til the next day?"  These guys are friends and they care but not nearly as much as the fans care.  THey work their butts off and give their best effort but when they lose they deal and move on.  I have a feeling Kevin Garnett is not sitting at home pouting nor is Ray Allen or Paul Pierce...they will try to get better but they have long forgot the last game.  But we as fans are crazy about our teams and they give us a release from the stresses of our lives and allow us to fraternize and socialize with some food and drink.  When you go on vacation do you try to forget about your job?  So don't they!

Yankees get scare as Teixeira hit on knee

I think what is being missed here is the fact that there is no rivalry on the field - the rivalry lies between all of us - the fans.  There is no bad blood between the players on these teams - they are all professionals being paid to play a child's game for our entertainment.

There is absolutely no way that Lester intended to hit anyone - in fact, Lester leads the AL in hit batters this year, it happens when his cutter doesn't cut and he typically hits batters in the exact same spot as he hit Teixeira.  If a NY pitcher pegs a Boston player it will be the dumbest thing he ever did - not because "our team is better than your team and is going to kick your a$$" but because it's going to cost the pitcher some money and likely will result in a suspension.

It is easy to tell when someone is looking to bean someone - the minute Lester hit Tex off the knee you could tell it was an accident and he paid attention to see if he was okay.  What I would like to see is a pitcher coming up to make sure the guy is okay and apologizing but as is customary in the sport Tex probably got a text message that said that he was sorry after the game from Lester.  Further evidence of the pegging being an accident is the fact that the umpire did not warn the benches whatsoever because it was clear that nobody was doing anything intentional.  Hit batsmen are a part of the game, it's an unfortunately side effect of pitchers hurling balls between 80 and 100 mph and typically not throwing the ball to the exact same spot two times in a row; just a little extra sweat on the hands or too much rosin can affect where a ball winds up - it's why batters wear helmets and why some players wear elbow pads, etc.  Tex was just in the wrong place at the wrong time - it happens.

Remember, the rivalry is between the fans - some of these guys even hang out together in the off-season - in fact, I happen to know that David Ortiz and Jorge Posada are good friends.  I'm glad to see that Mark Teixeira was not hurt because I know that baseballs off of bone hurt like hell.  Let's just hope that tonight nobody does anything stupid.  Both the Yankees and the Red Sox have a couple of knuckleheads on their team who do dumb crap sometimes (i.e. Joba Chamberlain and Jon Papelbon) - if anyone is going to do something stupid it's probably one of these guys.  My hope is that neither of them do anything dumb because we have a good AL East battle going on here and neither team can afford to lose one of their top players for an extended period of time with first place on the line.

Lastly, order has finally be restored in the AL East - the top two teams are Boston and New York - the way it should be and usually is.

Yankees get scare as Teixeira hit on knee

I wish the yankees had Kirk Gibson, Tony LaRussa or Jim LEyland as a manager. Adrain Gonzalez would be waking up with a round welt on his fanny this morning. they intentionally alk him?????? instead of hit him??? after tex gets hit??? the red sux have always hit yankees. Pedro, tavarez, all aholes. PEdro would have 262k's, 26 walks, and 8 hit yankees every season.. yea ok, thats not on purpose. Lester, may not have done it on "puropose", but for the sake of the yankees, girardi is a loser. i"d bet $$$, a ReAL manager gicves the sign for the beanball to the catcher to relay. Loved kirk gibson the oehr night, laughing in the face of the nations after marquis hit upton. Then the 'backs (who i hate, but respect now, bc those KIDS are playing hard in arizona), go and hit 2 nationals. Gibson is in the dugout telling them to "bring it", with a smile. LOVE it.  Thats a  team with balls, and a manager who's got your back. Sorry girardi, ur a loser, go kiss teixiera's boo-boo, thats the LEAST u can do for him at this point.  And if they go out, my yankees, and hit like marco scuturo tonight.. i'll be even MORE pissed about the Tex beaning. Thats not how it goes.

I disagree on the Texiera/GOnzalez thing. Yes I am a Sox fan but hear me out... Lester did not mean to hit him and their is room in the game for mistakes...Lester made one.  THere is zero history between the two and his cutter came in too much.  He was not throwing at him.  Now the thing you should be mad at is ORtiz.  Even I as a Sox fan cringed when he did that.  But you know what?  He got up again and nothing?  I never ever would agree with throwing at someones head...EVER but Ortiz should have got one in the buttox area.  I know Ortiz has been there for all the wars but I thought that was a bit flamboyant on his part and not really necessary at that point of the game.  Why wake up a team and tick them off...Look what it got Vancouver the other night.

Nice that Girardi doesn't like the bat flip, but I bet he was fine when they buzzed Ortiz earlier in that at bat.  They threw inside and he wasn't intimidated by it.   He got back at them where it counts...on the scoreboard.

Maybe if Garcia didn't serve up a fatty to Ellsbury and pitch like crap, they wouldn't have had to start throwing at Papi in the first place.

Yankees get scare as Teixeira hit on knee

Yeah, like when Fat Boy CC went head-hunting on Gonzalez in the first series?  And almost broke his finger?

NOW the teams are even.  If Girardi throws at Gonzo tonight, Jeter will get a Bard 100-MPH fastball in the grill Thursday night.  THEN the teams will be even again.
