Red Sox in on Ubaldo, but watch for Texas

The Rockies still aren't sure they'll trade Ubaldo Jimenez. They're still asking a ton for Ubaldo Jimenez.

But they sure haven't scared teams away.

The Red Sox are the latest team to inquire, sources said Tuesday. It's not yet clear how serious that interest is, or how strong a match there would be. The Red Sox have also continued to monitor the Carlos Beltran market.

While the Yankees' interest in Jimenez has been widely reported, some people familiar with the Rockies plans believe that the Reds or the Rangers would have a better chance of landing the ace right-hander. Both Cincinnati and Texas are said to have enough young talent to motivate the Rockies to make a deal.

The Tigers have also been in touch on Jimenez, but it appears they don't have enough available talent to get him. The Tigers continue to prioritize starting pitching; they've asked about almost every starter on the market.

Jimenez is scheduled to make his next start for Colorado on Tuesday night. Some teams are still trying to convince themselves that he is totally healthy.

Red Sox in on Ubaldo, but watch for Texas

I agree with the poster saying Ubaldo has been fairly average since the All-Star
break last year.  Actually he has been below average.  I think the Sox are just
drivng up the price vs the Yankees.  The Sox really do not have the prospects
the Yankees or the Rangers have to offer.  I do not see Jimenez as a good fit
in the AL East coming from the NL West with big ballparks and lots of foul territory.
Hopefully the Yankees will give up a couple of their top pitching prospects to get
Ubaldo who may be as good as their AJ Burnett move.

"problem is our number 1 prospect in the Rockies system is a catcher, Wilton Rosario"

have you actually read any of the reports going over the Yankees scenario?  No one, including the Yankees, view Montero as a catcher.  He would be the heir to 1B with Helton mentoring him no doubt.

This isn't really much of a surprise that the Red Sox and Yankees are "showing interest" in a big name talent that is available is it?

No this does not surprise me at all.  I don't think the sox will get him but it would be nice.  Though the price would be waaay to high for him and the sox don't have much to offer (prospect wise) and I don't want them giving up Josh Reddick or Ryan Kalish.

"I wouldn't give you Buchholtz straight up for Jiminez let alone bard and a prospect? He had one great year and I thinks hes good but lets not go crazy! you can have Lackey and Jenks for him though! ROFL!!!!!"

You're being kind, he had one half of a good year. He was 15-1 with a 2.20 first half then 4-7 with a 3.80 the second. Not coincidentally his career ERA (minus that first half) clocks in at 3.82.

Jimenez and Burnett match up a little too close to justify the price tag that is reportedly being demanded.

Burnett's regular-season average as a starter in the AL (which is the tougher league by far)?

Thirteen wins, 12 losses, 4.00 ERA, 216 innings, 193 hits, 92 walks, 193 K's and a WHIP of 1.37.

Jimenez? (All in the NL.)

Fourteen wins, 11 losses, 3.60 ERA, 212 innings, 178 hits, 92 walks, 191 K's and a WHIP of 1.27.

Jimenez has slightly better numbers but then again, Burnett has to pitch to DHs in a tougher league.

So you think Ubaldo is worth a 17 game winner last year, an all star caliber setup man/closer and an A prospect?   I wouldn't trade Bucholz straight up.   Since his spectacular start to last year he has been pretty average. At least one Rockies fan is a little dillusional.

"Texas has a ton to offer, frankly.  I can't name a ton of pitching...but Pedro Strop, Scott Feldman, Michael Kirkman come to mind as throw-ins.  Neil Ramirez is a legitimate prospect.  Would they trade Holland or big time prospect Perez?  Off the mound, all of these guys seem expendable or replaceable:  Taylor Teagarden, Yorvit Torrealba at C....Chris Davis or Mitch Moreland at 1B, David Murphy or Craig Gentry or Julio Borbon.  Any combinations of these guys would be worth trading to have Jimenez under contract for 2+ years."

Based on what they asked the Yankees for you better have 2 or 3 top tier pitchers and a very good option at 1B (Davis doesn't count...over 200ks in 600 career MLB ABs is going to keep him form being considered top tier).

A similar request to the one they asked the Yankees for would be Perez, Feldman, Kirkman AND Ramirez.
