Rangers get Mike Adams from Padres

A day after acquiring Koji Uehara from the Orioles, the Rangers added to their bullpen again Sunday by acquiring Mike Adams from the Padres.

Adams, the most sought-after setup man on the market, has a 1.13 ERA in 48 appearances this year for San Diego. He has held opponents to a .453 OPS.

The Rangers paid a steep price for Adams, giving up both Joe Wieland, the pitcher who threw a no-hitter last week for Double-A Frisco, and Robbie Erlin, another top Double-A pitching prospect. The Padres had reportedly sought Wieland and Erlin in exchange for closer Heath Bell.

With the trading deadline a little more than an hour away, the Padres were saying it was likely they would keep Bell, who can be a free agent at the end of the year but very much wants to remain in San Diego. Even if Bell were to leave as a free agent, the Padres would get two high draft picks as compensation.

The 33-year-old Adams, in some ways, had more value to teams than Bell, because he is under control through 2012.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!

Great moves by the JD...  had we acquired Bell he would've been a half season rental.  Thank goodness Koji and Adams are under contract next year.

Tough to lose those AA kids but as Ron Ron says, "That's the way baseball go"

BOOMSTICK!

Bring it on Wankees!  So glad they didn't get anyone.  Made my day!

BoSux will be tough but I think it's our year!

Nice moves by the Rangers!  We get arguably the best set up man in baseball in Mike Adams for a couple of prospects and the guy from the Orioles was pitching very well too.  Although I hate to see Tommy Hunter leave, you have to give up something in order to get something.  If Holland and Harrison weren't pitching as well as they have been, then I don't think Hunter gets traded.  I wish he and CD the best of luck with Buck and the gang in O's land and hopefully Chris can finally get over that hump and be a nice player for the O's.  Now, we just have to buckle down, take it one game at a time and hope to stay away from injuries.  Good job again JD!  We addressed an obvious weakness and should now be considered one of the favorites come playoff time!  GO RANGERS!! = )

So the Rangers wanted Bell but the Padres sent them Adams instead. Either the Padres are grossly incompetent or they thought that the Rangers could not tell Adams and Bell apart.

The Padres made a great move adding to an already potent arsenal.  On the other hand, if you can get a title, you have to go for it.  The Rangers do and so they did. WIN-WIN.  Go Rangers!

Agreed that it's was a good deal for both but the Padres have some major prospects in pitching. Add these two with Casey Kelly they got from RedSox and they have a lot of deepth in their minor system.

Good deal for both teams.  Rangers get another great reliever and shore up a weakness and still have him under control for next year.  Feliz will move into the starting roll and Adams will become the closer in 2012 (hopefully with rings on their fingers).  Padres get two guys that should slot into the rotation in a year or two.  They have to be loving Petco as opposed to The Sauna in Arlington.

Rangers get Mike Adams from Padres

Sweet for the Padres to pick up such high quality pitchers for a 33 year old setup man. Albeit Mike Adams is the best at what he does but San Diego always seems to have among the best pens in mlb every year. Joe Wieland is a top young prospect. Great trade Jed. Go Padres

Rangers get Mike Adams from Padres

It seems as if they just as easily could of got Heath Bell from the San Diego Padres. They may even have got Bell for the exact same prospects and no one else included, but Adams has nevertheless been lights out this year and is an intimidating presence on the mound. The Rangers already have Neftali Feliz and now Kijo Uehara at the back of their bullpen and adding Adams will make them a formidable opponent after their starter leaves the games. The Rangers' offense puts up monstrous numbers on a regular basis, so knowing they will be extremely tough to beat when leading after six innings will only instill more confidence within them. These moves may have silently lifted Texaas towards being a World Series favourite, although they may have to get past both the Yankees and the Red Sox in the postseason and that will be a quest and a half.

Rangers get Mike Adams from Padres

As a fan of the Padres it is tough to see Mike Adams get traded. The key to the deal was the fact that he is under contract through 2012. I wish him luck as he moves on to Texas. It will be a homecoming of sorts for him as he is a Texas native. The Rangers will win the west and will be a tough opponent for whoever they face in the ALDS and beyond!!
