Another game lost...and a season with it?

NEW YORK -- Top of the first inning Sunday: Jacoby Ellsbury leads off with a single, and promptly gets picked off.

Bottom of the first inning Sunday: The Yankees turn two bunt singles, two steals, a wild pitch, a passed ball and an error into two runs.

The game could have ended right there. The Red Sox season could have ended right there.

You thought the 9-1 loss to the Yankees on Saturday was bad? Well, the 6-2 loss on Sunday afternoon was no better.

And John Lackey, owner of the worst ERA of any regular starting pitcher in baseball, starts for the Red Sox on Sunday night.

Oh, and the out-of-town scoreboard kept showing the Rays ahead of the Blue Jays. The Rays won, 5-2, cutting the Boston lead in the wild card to just half a game.

"We've got four games," manager Terry Francona said. "We can right our whatever. We need to work on our righting skills."

Francona then wrote out a Game 2 lineup that included J.D. Drew, in his first appearance since July 19.

There is some good news, Red Sox fans. Jacoby Ellsbury hit two home runs, his 29th and 30th of the year. He has 100 RBI. He's having a great September.

He'd be an MVP candidate, if his teammates weren't collapsing around him.

The Red Sox are 5-18 in September. They're 1-18 when they don't score 12 runs.

Their starting pitchers -- it was Tim Wakefield Sunday afternoon -- have a 7.32 ERA.

They've scored first in just two of their last 16 games.

They might have scored first Sunday afternoon -- except that Ellsbury got picked off. The Yankees scored first -- because the Red Sox handed them two runs.

Oh, and John Lackey starts Sunday night. With J.D. Drew in right field.

Another game lost...and a season with it?

I am trying to think of 2 other teams in any other sport that even regular season games, more often than not, feel like playoff games? Maybe the 70's & 80's Redskins-Cowboys? No matter which side you are on....you gotta love it.

As I have been saying, I don't see the Red Sox actually hanging on to the Wild Card. But even if they do, their pitching has been a complete wreck ever since September 1st. I don't see how they will be able to pitch to the Rangers' lineup (that's the current projected matchup) if they can't even beat teams like the Baltimore Orioles. i can't even envision the once "2011 AL champion pick" making it to the ALCS. But like I said, the Rays will win the Wild Card, especially if the Red Sox don't pull out this extra inning battle against the Yankees, which is currently tied in the 14th as I am typing.

Don't be so sure. Once the playoffs start it's all extremely (though not completely, to be sure) random.

I agree that the Sox has been playing bad, there is a chance they play better in the playoffs. I am a Ray fan so I am hoping that Sox keep on losing, but the Rays would have to play better against the Yankees.

I think Verlander walks away with the MVP and CY young.  Granderson should be there also.

As a Mets fan, I can attest-it's hard to hit the brakes when you rolling downhill so fast

Tampa has to play the Yankees their last three games...Boston plays Baltimore. Even if they lose the second game of the double-header (which I think they will), it's still Advantage Red Sox.

Hey buddy, obviously those homegrown boys are not good enough to win a championship so Theo thought it would be smart to sign Crawford and Lackey for 230 million dollars. If you think, they are not winning because of injuries, good luck with that. Keep the same roster and let them get healthy and they still will come in 3rd next year. Right now, I don't see any stud coming up in the farm system. Go spend another 300 million on some other overrated players and surpass the Yankees payroll. Theo has gotten lazzzzy!!!

Statistics, Statistics.  You could have said, BOSTON IS 4 AND 0 WHEN THEY SCORE 12 OR MORE RUNS.  Was that so hard?  Go Rangers!
