Another game lost...and a season with it?

NEW YORK -- Top of the first inning Sunday: Jacoby Ellsbury leads off with a single, and promptly gets picked off.

Bottom of the first inning Sunday: The Yankees turn two bunt singles, two steals, a wild pitch, a passed ball and an error into two runs.

The game could have ended right there. The Red Sox season could have ended right there.

You thought the 9-1 loss to the Yankees on Saturday was bad? Well, the 6-2 loss on Sunday afternoon was no better.

And John Lackey, owner of the worst ERA of any regular starting pitcher in baseball, starts for the Red Sox on Sunday night.

Oh, and the out-of-town scoreboard kept showing the Rays ahead of the Blue Jays. The Rays won, 5-2, cutting the Boston lead in the wild card to just half a game.

"We've got four games," manager Terry Francona said. "We can right our whatever. We need to work on our righting skills."

Francona then wrote out a Game 2 lineup that included J.D. Drew, in his first appearance since July 19.

There is some good news, Red Sox fans. Jacoby Ellsbury hit two home runs, his 29th and 30th of the year. He has 100 RBI. He's having a great September.

He'd be an MVP candidate, if his teammates weren't collapsing around him.

The Red Sox are 5-18 in September. They're 1-18 when they don't score 12 runs.

Their starting pitchers -- it was Tim Wakefield Sunday afternoon -- have a 7.32 ERA.

They've scored first in just two of their last 16 games.

They might have scored first Sunday afternoon -- except that Ellsbury got picked off. The Yankees scored first -- because the Red Sox handed them two runs.

Oh, and John Lackey starts Sunday night. With J.D. Drew in right field.

Farm system: you mean, aside from Lester, Buchholz, Bard, Papelbon, Youkilis, Pedroia, Ellsbury?

Hey buddy. Did you just wake up from a 3 year nap. While all home grown, those guys havent been in the Red Sox farm system for years.

I will say this, Yanks and Sawx fans are obnoxious, but I would say the Sawx a little more, now that they are consistent winners they still whine like biatches and both teams should be ashamed at how long they take to play a game. No game should take 4 fin hours and the league needs to yell at both teams. Beckett and Papelbon take 2 years to throw a pitch and the Yanks are the same way. Its embarrassing. Pick up the damn pace.

I'm sorry but there is no contest when it comes to the most obnoxious fans...it's a straight tie between Boston, NY, and Philly.. Quit blaming Philly all the time..Boston is full of snot noses, New York is arrogant, period..and Philly is just disrespected by everyone...

I am a longtime Sox fan, but this team should just forfeit it's remaining games and let some team that will actually put up a fight have the playoff spot. Shameful.

You would think the Sawx would learn after winning 2 WS. They thought the season ended in July instead of September. They remind me of the Yankees of the early 2000s, signing left over Free agents like Lackey and Crawford that no one really wanted. What happened to their great farm system? The Yankees hve finally smartened up, no longer trading prospects and re-developing their farm system. They have stud pitching on their way with Montero. They are taking over the divison with TB. Theo needs to go. He is getting lazy and his Free Agent signings from Dice K to Drew to Lackey to Crawford to Jenks have been awful!!!!!

Another game lost...and a season with it?

The Sox played a Jimi Hendrix song at a home game last week and I heard someone yell to the sox "Hendrix has more life than you guys do"  How true . How true.

"Agreed,  the sox are playing outright lousy ball and are stinking up the joint, but to say where are the obnoxious Sox fans now, reeks of hypocrisism as obviously is a New Yorker who are undisputably the most obnoxious fans in any sport. Were still here and while we are suffering we have not given up our loyalty to the team.  Curses on the " Evil Empire ".  May the feas of a thousand camel invest your armpits !!"

Um, no, that would be Philly fans.

I'm very pleased.  IT took so long to get to the point where Boston has to say "uncle" to the Yanks - a long, long time - but here we are.  Boston on the verge of choking away  apretty big lead.  I'm very pleased.
